The day after Mr. Templeton’s death, I told Anh to book a flight back to California.

“Are you sure?” she asked, obviously upset but trying not to make things harder on me.

“I’m sure. The best thing you can do for me right now is to run the business and cover for me. I hate to ask you to take on all the extra stress – ”

“Don’t worry about it, I can handle it. But, um… what about the wedding?”

The wedding. Even though I hadn’t been able to work on it at all, it still lurked in the back of my mind at all times. It was beginning to feel less and less like the happiest day of my life, and more and more like I was a tiny one-propeller airplane and the wedding was Mt. Everest, an impossibly high obstacle that was getting ominously nearer by the second.

“We’ll deal with it when this is all over. Right now, Connor’s my only priority.”

“I totally understand,” she said, and gave me a hug. “Take care of him – and yourself, too. I like Connor, but he’s marrying my favorite person in the whole wide world.”

I started to cry as I hugged her back.

Best friend, business partner, and former roommate ever.
