Everything dissolved into bedlam.
Lenora was screaming, Sebastian was trying to argue with the cops, I was running alongside Connor trying to stay with him, Johnny was on Connor’s other side making sure this wasn’t some sort of assassination plot, the cops were shoving all of us out of the way, and people were gasping and muttering and staring.
As soon as we got outside, the media were waiting, as though they’d been tipped off. News reporters surged forward, holding out microphones and shouting questions. Dozens of flashes went off as Det. Morse put his hand on Connor’s head and forced him roughly into the back of a police cruiser.
Connor gave me a bewildered look before the car roared off down the road.
