We got back to the penthouse an hour later. Sebastian was sitting in the study in front of the computer.

“Any luck?” he asked as Bert and I walked in.

“They didn’t have Mr. Templeton’s cell phone,” I said excitedly. “And I saw him use it when he walked out of here after dinner.”

Sebastian stared. “You think whoever killed him took it?”

“Yes.”

Sebastian steepled his fingers in front of his mouth and narrowed his eyes. “Maybe so we couldn’t know who he was talking to.”

Bert plopped down in a leather chair. “You guys are intent on the conspiracy theory angle, aren’t you?”

“It’s the only thing that makes sense,” I said angrily. “Unless you think Connor had something to do with it.”

Bert lifted up his hands like Don’t get your panties in a wad. “I’m just sayin’.”

I circled around the desk and looked at the computer monitor, which had an email account open onscreen. “Any luck on your end?” I asked Sebastian.

“No. I emailed and called the personal phone numbers we had on file, but there’s no answer to the email, and the phone numbers were disconnected.”

“Damn it,” I mumbled.

“It was a long shot,” Sebastian said. “If they’re still in Europe, that means it’s the middle of the night for them. And if they’re still on the run like you said, there’s no way that they would – ”

Suddenly the computer screen went black.

Sebastian and I both gawked and then leaned in close.

A single cursor blinked onscreen, then typed out a few words:

Hi Lily. It’s Eve.

“Holy shit,” Sebastian muttered.
