Bert walked with us out of the courtroom, past the annoying phalanx of reporters. Once we were past them, we began to talk.

“You can’t see him until after they process him at Rikers,” Bert said. “But it will be soon. Very soon, I promise.”

“This is fucked up,” I said, tears spilling down my cheeks. “He didn’t do anything.”

“Why did they put him in Rikers?” Sebastian asked Bert.

“I have no idea,” Bert said. “It’s… highly unusual.”

“Do you think Miranda could be behind it?” I sobbed. “Do you think she could have bought the judge, or threatened him or something?”

“We’re not going down that road,” Bert said firmly. “We’re not doing it.”

“Is it really dangerous in Rikers?”

“He’s going to be fine,” Bert soothed me.

But I saw the look Sebastian and Johnny exchanged, and I knew Bert was just saying that to be comforting.

“We have to get in touch with Eve,” I said.

Almost on cue, my phone chimed. I pulled it out of my purse.

My texting application was open, and there was a message on the screen from Sheet Rock Girl. Whom I had never put in my contact list. Which meant Eve must have done it.

Ready to talk?

“Is that her?” Sebastian asked, shocked.

“Yes,” I answered Sebastian, then started to type back –

Just talk, I can hear you.

“But… we’re not on a phone call,” I protested.

Doesn’t matter. Just hold up the phone so the others can see the screen.

“Okay, I’m officially freaked out now,” Sebastian murmured.

“Whoa,” Johnny said.

Bert looked around nervously. “Is this a good idea to do this here?”

As long as you don’t start shouting ‘The hacker is on the phone,’ I think you’re alright.

“How did you know to text when you did?” I asked, amazed.

Same as yesterday – I was monitoring you. I have some information. What do you want first?

“I don’t know – is there anything that can clear Connor?” I asked, hopeful she would say ‘yes,’ and terrified she would say ‘no.’

Not directly. I haven’t found any smoking guns.

My heart sank.

But I’ve found the limo driver – or at least his phone.

Suddenly life was worth living again.

“Let’s go talk to him,” I said.
