“What did you say?” I asked the doctor again, even though I heard what he said the first time. I just didn’t want to believe it.

“He is in ICU now, he is not in any immediate danger, but he’s lost a lot of blood and is currently unresponsive.”

“What does that mean then? If he’s unresponsive, what does that mean?”

“We can’t say anything yet, Ms. We can just hope and pray that he fully responds to the world of the living again.”

Respond to the world of the living again? I didn’t know what that meant, but why was it the scariest thing I ever heard?

“But you just said he is not in any immediate danger right now, how is he not in danger if he is not responding to the ‘world of the living’?” I raised my voice as I felt another lump rising in my throat. What did he mean bymyJay was not responding to theworld of the living?

“I’ll explain this to you in a layman’s language. He will hear you if you speak to him, he’s just not moving or opening his eyes. His heart rate is extremely low, but he is alive. In one word, he is in a vegetative state right now.” He explained, pushing his glasses from his nose back to his eyes.

He would hear me if I spoke to him, but he wouldn’t see me? That was torture to him and I. How would he feel if he –wherever he was– heard my voice, but couldn’t see me? Why was the universe doing this to us? Why did the world always find ways to separate us whenever we wanted to be together? Were we never destined to be together or were we just two unlucky folks?

“He’s going to be fine, Ms, by the grace of God. He lost a lot of blood, if he wanted to, he would have died. He is a strong man that clearly has a reason he is fighting so hard to stay alive. If you are the reason, just make sure you speak to him every time. Jesus is always with all of us.”

I sniggered. Jesus?

“Yes, Jesus.” He said and I widened my eyes in shock. How did he… “I don’t read minds, but your face clearly said ‘Jesus?’” He said with a small laugh. “Go to the counter and sign as his primary caregiver. But if you sign, nobody will be allowed to visit him until you give permission so please be sure his family wants you to be his primary caregiver.”

Family? He didn’t have any family and I didn’t either, we only had each other so there was nobody to notify. I nodded as my eyes began to well up again. He was in a coma and no one knew when he would wake up. I had spent a year in a coma, would it be the same for him?

A year with nobody to annoy me, a year with nobody to call me Flower, a year without the person I just confessed my feelings to.

I got to the counter and signed to be Jayden’s primary caregiver as my hand shook around the pen I was holding. My knees softened like jelly and my heart pounded so hard. I covered my mouth with my hand to stop the short breaths that were coming out.

I was scared. Scared for today, scared for tomorrow and scared for what the future held. I shut my eyes to imagine a future without Jayden, but as I closed my eyes, there he was striding to me with his signature sweet smile on his face. His eyes lit up as Ariana jumped into his arms and I laughed, while Kendal rolled his eyes at both of them with a smile on his face.

He was there. He was in our future, inMYfuture and that gave me strength and hope. I signed the last page on the file I was given with a grin on my face and walked out the hospital door to do other things as Jaydenslept.

THREE MONTHS LATER

“…So after that, Ari was like ‘oh please, suck is not a cuss word, and I swear, he really sucked. Which teacher ties their shoe lace like an idiot only to step on it and fall on their face in front of six hundred students’” I recalled to Jayden and breathed a laugh, while I played with his fingers.

He was still looking alluring as always and was smelling fresh as well, since the nurses had just changed his clothes before I came in. They took really good care of him in the VIP room I transferred him to and I was satisfied.

“Honestly, Ariana is getting sassier day by day. She asked about you though. They were here last week, but I didn’t want them disturbing you so I didn’t bring them this week.” I said to him.

Ariana and Kendal had fought the last time they came, and a nurse had to come take them to the corridor because they were shouting. But guess what? Yeah, only one of them could talk.

“Do you think I raised her up as a spoiled brat? I want her to be the best of herself in the future, so I should change my ways of training her, right?” I asked and nodded to myself, I really should. “She will be thirteen next month and I’m still thinking of a gift for her. She’s going to be a teenager and hopefully less trouble to deal with.”

Since I changed them from the boarding school they formerly went to –after Mr Rey said they wanted to find them before they called me because they were scared of my reaction– they told me everything that happened each day at their new day school and even wrote some down to tell Jayden whenever they visited.

“You remember Chan visited last month, right? He called me earlier to tell me he booked a flight for next month too. I can’t wait to see him. Will you wake up before then so I can properly introduce you both?” I asked with a smile on my face.

It was always nice talking to him, knowing that wherever he was at the moment, he could hear me and probably even laugh whenever I said something funny.

It had been threelongmonths and honestly I didn’t know how much longer I would have to wait for him to wake up, but I would wait.

I hadn’t heard from my mother since I stormed out of her house in South Africa and I didn’t want to. I wasn’t joking when I told her to forget she had a daughter.

“The case I told you about, I’m executing it tonight.” I announced to him. It was my second case since what happened three months ago, and people knew Alex was back.

The first case was a thirty-three-year-old man who molested a fourteen-year-old boy. He claimed he wanted it and said that he was also hard when they were doing it. He also said the boy was nineteen years old and his family made a new birth certificate for the boy proclaiming him as nineteen instead of fourteen because they were scared of the man.

According to the mother;‘I just want my son safe with me. I want my family and I to travel to a new place and start a new life. People like him have powers and I don’t want to disagree with him. He would still be set free, but my son would be dead and I don’t want that.’
