Whyyy?

When he approached, I’d expected him to drill me about my weird behavior the other day…not ask me out to dinner.

"Um, are you sure?"

Fuck, shit, fuck, shit. That's literally the worst thing I could have said.

"Of course I'm sure."

He looks at me with those dark-brown eyes and a soft smile on his lips, and something inside of me melts. He really is asking me out.

"Um, okay. Yes. I would… I'd like that. Thank you."

Correction. That'sthe worst thing I could have said. Who the fuck thanks someone for asking them out? PJ Henderson, that's who.

"What sort of food do you like?" he asks, ignoring my stupidity, thank god.

"You might not be able to tell by looking at me, but I love all the food, and I want to eat as much of it as possible."

That makes him smile. "Can I confess something?"

"Sure."

"I was going to suggest that new French restaurant that's just opened up because I wanted you to think that I was fancy and sophisticated, but…"

"But what?"

His smile grows. "The Pancake Pantry has an all-you-can-eat buffet every Wednesday night."

A small giggle escapes me. For someone so big and scary looking, Branum's actually quite gentle.

"I loooove pancakes."

"Great." He lets out a dazzling smile. "Can I pick you up at seven?"

"Sounds good." I pull out the small notepad I always carry. "Let me give you my address."

Why did Wednesday have to be so far away?

Okay, so in reality it's only been slightly longer than forty-eight hours since Branum asked me out, but these past two days have stretched out for an eternity. To make matters worse, Branum hasn't set foot in the library yesterday or today. It's the first time he hasn't come in since I spotted him by the river a few weeks ago.

Has something happened? Is something wrong? I gave him my address, but we didn't exchange numbers, so there's no way for me to find out.

Well, there is one way.

I glance at the time. It's five to seven, and I'm dressed and ready to go.

The question is, will Branum show up?

Trevor sure seemed to think so. He's been buzzing with excitement ever since I told him Branum had asked me out. He seemed almost a littletooinvested, the way he carried on about it.

He didn't think it was a big deal that Branum hadn't shown up these past two days. I wish I shared his confidence.

There's a loud knock on the door. I almost jump out of my skin.

He's here.
