The excitement was almost overwhelming. "That sounds perfect!" April said, trying hard not to sound too eager. She thanked Millie for her interest and provided directions to the estate before they hung up.

Everything was falling into place. April would hire this woman to help out around the place, and she would be able to start on the ranch. It was all coming together.

Though, she was getting ahead of herself. Millie would have to prove that she could handle the work that April couldn't manage on her own.

But after that, April would be free.

CHAPTER SEVEN

When Millie arrived, April welcomed her with open arms and ushered her into the lobby area.

A beaming smile showed Millie's white teeth, and her eyes were sparkling with excitement. Her blonde hair was pulled up in a ponytail, and she wore a mid-length blue dress that hugged her well.

Millie was taller than April expected. Though she wore heels, April knew that Millie would still be hovering over her without them. She was lanky and thin, legs that went on forever and arms that hung low at her sides.

It wasn't what April expected, but she liked something about her. And she wanted more than anything a competent person to help her around the estate.

She wanted to give her a tour and explain all the responsibilities that came with the job. After introductions, they did just that.

April gestured grandly as they walked through what used to be the living room. "This area is meant to be a place where guests can relax and enjoy each other's company. You would be responsible for keeping this space tidy and inviting."

"It's lovely," Millie said, eyeing the simplistic and modern furniture Georgia and April had spent hours picking out. It was always nice to receive compliments on the style.

April smiled proudly, grateful for the hard work she had put into decorating the space. "Thank you! We try to make it feel like a home away from home for our guests. And of course, the cleanliness is a top priority."

She led Millie through the rest of the house, showing her the bedrooms and the dining area. "You'll be in charge of preparing the small breakfast items and keeping the kitchen clean," April explained. "And you'll also be responsible for cleaning the guest rooms and ensuring that everything is well-stocked."

Millie nodded eagerly. "It sounds like a lot of work, but I think I can handle it."

"Were you in charge of all of this at your last job in hospitality? I saw you worked for a hotel not too long ago."

April looked at her as they made their way back to the welcome desk. "I'm used to the cleaning and prep work. I'll just have to learn the computer system. That's different everywhere you go." Her smile made April feel good.

What was it that Millie exuded that caught April's attention? She was just so captivating, April couldn't get herself to look away. Maybe it was confidence or a kind of charm.

"Well, you'll have plenty of time to become familiar with the system," April said. "Why don't we go over some of your resume qualifications? That way I can get a better feel for if you would be a good fit here."

Millie nodded, and they sat down behind the desk in the lobby. April opened up Millie's file and scanned through it, pointing out some of her experience in hospitality and customer service as well as her past roles in team management.

April was impressed. She could see that Millie was an experienced worker.

"And what would you do if you encountered a disgruntled guest?"

Millie leaned forward, her expression serious. "Well, I would listen to their concerns and try to understand their perspective. Then, I would apologize on behalf of the establishment and offer them a solution that would rectify the situation to the best of my abilities. It's important to make sure our guests feel heard and valued."

April nodded, satisfied with Millie's response. "Great answer. And what about managing multiple tasks at once? This job can get pretty hectic sometimes."

"I'm used to managing a busy lobby," she replied confidently. "In fact, I find that I work best under pressure."

“That’s impressive,” April said, trying to hide the excitement in her voice. “I love that. Could you tell me about a time when you were forced to work in a chaotic environment?”

Millie put a finger to her chin in thought, but April wondered if it was just a charade. She had to have all of her answers memorized by how well they sounded. “There was this one time,” she finally began, “I was working at the customer service desk of a department store and the customers were getting quite rowdy.”

April had never had to work somewhere like that, so she didn’t understand the work that happened behind the counter.

“My manager was on break, so I had to take charge. I called up my other employees and organized the customers into neat lines. It worked really well, actually. They all listened up after that," she explained with a smile.

It was hard to find flaws in Millie. But April liked that she'd managed to find the best in town. It felt good to know that such a good worker was interested in helping her out.
