"And do you have any references?"

She nodded her head and pulled out a piece of paper with handwritten names and numbers. "Sorry, it's not more professional. I wanted their permission before you called them. So I had to get their okay last minute."

Looking through the names, there wasn't one she didn't recognize. Several were from big name hotels and the other two were local business owners.

"Okay, and-"

April was quickly interrupted by a man who checked in earlier that day. His bald head reflecting the sun behind him. "Sorry to bother you," he said, his voice so soft they both had to lean forward to hear him. "But I was wondering if you knew any local places to get lunch."

Before she could open her mouth to tell the man that she would help, Millie stood. With a smile, she grabbed one of the lists of local spots from behind the desk and handed it to the man.

Impressed, April raised her brows. But then she did something that sealed her a position at the bed and breakfast.

"If you look here, you'll find the best places in town. I recommend these two," she said, pointing to the paper. "You're going to take this road and then..."

Millie droned on, explaining how to get to each of the diners in town before coming back to her seat and sending the man off. With a smile, he got into his car and drove off towards town.

It was no question that she wouldn't call and check on Millie's performance. She showed exactly what she was capable of in just a few minutes. It was impressive how eloquently she handled the situation.

If April experienced this level of customer service somewhere, she would have a hard time ever leaving. And that's exactly the kind of help she needed.

"You're hired," she said without a second thought.

"Seriously?"

April nodded, a smile spreading across her face. Who wouldn't hire someone as perfect as her?

Millie beamed with joy, her eyes sparkling. "Thank you so much! I won't let you down."

"I have no doubt about that," April said, returning Millie's smile. "When are you available to start?"

Still flabbergasted, Millie stumbled on her words. "Uh, immediately."

It felt like a weight had been lifted off of April's shoulders. She sighed in relief. She finally had someone to help her with the bed and breakfast.

April felt grateful that she had found such a competent and charming addition to her staff. She knew that with Millie's help, the bed and breakfast could thrive beyond her wildest dreams.

"Fantastic. Let's get you started on the computer system. We have a guests arriving in a few hours and I want to make sure everything is perfect."

Millie eagerly agreed and filled out her employment paperwork as April set up the system and wrote out instructions. It only took a few minutes to get her system ready. All Millie would have to do was press a few buttons and then show the guest to their room.

Just as April was about to finish explaining everything to Millie, her phone buzzed in her pocket. She took it out and saw that she had a text from Nigel.

She slipped her phone back into her pocket and waited until Millie felt comfortable with the program. Then, she stepped away and checked her phone.

Any chance you could come over and talk tonight?

It was the moment she'd been dreading. She didn't want to talk about Lily. But she knew they had to. Whatever was between April and Nigel, it felt different now.

Maybe it was her pushing back, running away from the first sign of insecurity. But she couldn't help it. She didn't like how his ex-girlfriend showed up out of the blue.

It didn't help that Nigel didn't say the right things when he had the chance. She told him to figure out how he felt. Maybe he finally had.

CHAPTER EIGHT

The night air was cool on her skin as she walked down the street. Even in the dark, she could see that there were still people out and about, enjoying their time. She was slightly envious.

Though she agreed to have dinner at Nigel's house, she worried about how it would go. In her heart, she still hadn't forgiven him for how he acted that night Lily came into town.
