"I feel the same way, Jeremy," she replied softly. In that moment of utter clarity and vulnerability, leaving each other and returning to work became even more challenging.

Jill’s eyes were brimming with desire while the flames flickered insistently between us.

Surrendering to our desires right then and there held an equal measure of thrill and risk.

The urge to touch her under her clothes, taste her lips, feel her body pressed against mine surged through me like a tide. It felt as though the universe itself had conspired to bring us to this precipice, and in that moment, giving in felt like the most natural course of action.

Nevertheless, rationality persisted in its efforts.

What if we were discovered by someone unsuspecting? What if our actions were laid bare for all to see, resulting in a scandal that would shake the very foundations of our professional lives?

The fear of the unknown weighed heavily on me.

My eyes darted towards the door. Visions raced through my mind—the possibility of a colleague or janitorial employee stumbling upon our passionately locked embrace was a scenario that would undoubtedly trigger a scandal capable of shattering our carefully constructed lives.

And yet, when I returned my eyes to Jill, her pleading gaze and parted lips fed a fire in me that I couldn’t ignore. In that instant, any logical thought evaporated into thin air.

“I don’t have any protection here with me,” I said, my voice breathy with desire. “I’ll have to run next door and get some. If we’re going to risk everything else, we can’t also risk that.”

She smirked, rolling her eyes slightly as her knees fell open and moved back shut playfully as her body grinded back against me from her place between me and the sofa.

“You worry too much,” she sighed. “We can just forget it. We can go back to work and pick this back up later.” She began to straighten her clothes.

Although the suggestion sounded sincere, her tone and mischievous facial expression read otherwise. She was teasing me. She knew I couldn’t return to work- not now.

As I looked back at her, smiling at her coy response, I decided to play along.

“Sure,” I said. “Let’s do that.”

I smiled, knowing she was as powerless to ignore the tension between us as I was.

She groaned, frustrated that I’d called her bluff.

“How fast can you run next door?” she asked, sticking her bottom lip into a playful pout.

“Time me,” I said. “Less than 2 minutes. Maybe three if the elevator’s slow.”

She pulled her arm in front of her, fidgeting with the screen of her smartwatch.

“Okay,” she said playfully. “Ready?”

I stood up and adjusted my clothing.

“Start timing!” I said, sprinting toward the door. “If anyone stops in and asks, you and I are working on a project. You’re just here waiting for me to get back!”

“Deal,” she said, biting her bottom lip seductively as she smiled at me. “Better run.”

"I’ll be right back,” I promised, closing the door behind me.

Leaving her there, yearning and aching, I hurried out of my office and to the elevator to begin my run next door.

The hallway was uncharacteristically quiet, draped in an unsettling silence. An unease settled over me as I hurried through the hall, hoping not to run into anybody. Noticing the quiet, though, I couldn’t help but wonder if we’d already been heard.

I felt watched with every step toward the lobby, although I knew it was unlikely anyone had even the slightest idea what was happening. I knew I was being sneaky, though, and that wasn’t something that came easily for me.

As I neared the ground floor, my heart pounding, I spotted Stacey approaching from the opposite direction. Panic surged, compelling me to seek refuge in a janitorial closet. The last thing I needed was for her to drag me into some 30-minute lecture about a new company policy she wanted to implement while Jill waited, turned on, upstairs.

Holding my breath, I silently pleaded for her not to see me. Minutes ticked by agonizingly slow as I strained to catch any faint sound of their voice fading as she walked in the other direction.
