I don’t have to go home to know my house was hit, and Jase knows the same.

Gabe settles back in his seat after swiping through the photos. “I haven’t heard from Ivy. I hope that means—”

Our phones ping again.

Gabe’s house, despite how out of the way it is, got hit.

All of them damaged in some way. Windows broken, landscaping destroyed, other cars torched. None of us were left untouched. Each one with the same warning message spray-painted on the outside.

“Motherfucker,” Tanner growls.

He’s going to go bald at an early age at this rate. He’s yanking at his hair with both hands now.

Standing from his seat, he paces the room, the gears in that head of his grinding as he comes up with the next plan of attack.

Treachery has returned, and by the clipped tone of his stride and the way his jaw tics like he’s chewing gum, Tanner is on the hunt.

He stops in place eventually, everyone’s attention on him when he turns to face us.

“Shane, you need sleep. Take Brinley to her place, and pack some bags for at least four days. Then go back to your place. Pack your own damn bags, then crash for a few hours. When you wake up, you’re leaving.”

Confused, I glance at Brinley then back to him. “Where are we going?”

“Georgia.”

Brinley stills in place. “Why?”

“To find your dad,” he answers. “That’s our part in this deal.”

Nodding her head, she chews her lip. “But I have school.”

Tanner waves her off. “Don’t worry about that. Taylor can work wonders with getting you excused, or grade correction, if need be. This is more important, right? Your dad is more important, right?”

She nods again.

“Why can’t we just take Gabe’s plane?” I ask.

Gabe lets out a cynical laugh and drops his phone on the table beside him.

“After reviewing the photos of my house, I have to wonder if my plane even has wings at this point. The governor took us all out.”

Ivy seriously needs her head checked with her insistence that Scott isn’t that bad. The fucker is a problem.

A massive one.

Tanner pipes up again.

“You’re the only one with a car at the moment. You can go ahead. The rest of us are going to hang back here to figure out this issue with the governor. Once I’m certain the attacks are done, Gabe and I will take the plane to meet you there. We’ll bring whoever is necessary.”

Brinley shifts in her seat, looks at me then then drops one more nugget of information.

“Ames told me she called the cops and reported me missing. Is there any chance the governor found out about the report and that’s why he’s doing all this?”

Tanner and Gabe have another one of their silent conversations. Decision made, Gabe speaks first.

“Is there any way you can ask Ames to hide out for a few days? I’m concerned that she knows where to find the kids decrypting the flash drive. If the governor is this desperate—”

“I’ll tell her to stay with Granger,” Brinley interrupts. “He won’t let her out of his sight.”
