Plan made, Tanner practically kicks us out of his house, his frustration so high that I’m happy to escape him.

Brinley and I walk a slow, awkward path to my car, climbing in and remaining quiet until we’re almost to her dorm.

Now that we’re not at each other’s throats, I kind of miss it. Not the fact that she’s a pain in the ass and I’m fucking up her day just because I can. But the glares were adorable. The barbs. The quick insults that were traded with impressive aim.

Brinley hits hard when she punches, and not just in a physical sense.

“When we get to my dorm, you can stay in the car. I’ll run up alone—”

“Not going to happen,” I say, cutting her off with a tone of voice that leaves no room for argument.

Not that she won’t try.

It is Brinley, after all.

Turning her head my direction, she eyes the side of my face. I keep my attention on the road even though I suspect it’s a glare that she’s giving me. I hate to miss it.

“Of course, it’s going to happen, because that’s what I’m telling you will happen.”

“Nope,” I answer with a popping P.

She shifts in her seat more, as if squaring off in what little space she has in the car.

I’m not worried about her using her ninja skills. I’m driving, and in Brinley’s safe world, distracting the driver at the speed we’re going would be dangerous.

“My dorm is my space, and if I tell you that you’re uninvited then you have to respect it.”

“I do respect it.”

“Oh, well, then good. So you’ll stay in the car.”

“Nope,” I say again. “I said I respect it. But I never said I’m going to abide by it.”

We reach a red light, and once the car is at a full stop, I steal a glance at her.

She’s at full glare status with her little narrowed eyes and everything. Adorable.

“All of our houses were just hit by freaking mercenaries from what we can tell by Tanner’s cameras. For all we know, those hits came because you are supposedly missing, meaning the governor has a hard-on about finding you. What makes you think he doesn’t have someone waiting here, looking for you just in case you return?”

Straightening in her seat, she stares out the front windshield, hard, refusing to even side-eye me. “I can take care of myself.”

I still have sand in my teeth which leaves me with no doubt that she’s a major pain in the ass, but I highly doubt throwing sand at someone like Scott is going to stop him.

“I’m going inside with you. Case closed.”

She’s quiet again.

Probably calculating her next argument.

Most likely deciding where to bury my body.

But I’m not budging on this. I stole her fair and square, and I went through absolute hell to get her to this point.

There’s absolutely no fucking way I’m taking the chance of someone else taking her away.

Pulling up into the dorm parking lot, I expect her next argument.

A physical attack of some kind with her nerdy ninja skills.
