It’s like she knows how I’m struggling inside to be around her, and she’s turning the dial higher.

Reaching out, she touches the side of my face with her hand. To make matters worse, she leans her face closer to mine and speaks so softly that my dick comes to life.

“I think you do hate yourself. And I also think that somewhere inside you, there’s a halfway decent person hiding behind a gruff exterior.”

I should push her hand away, but I’m enjoying it too much.

“I’ve never met him.”

Her smile distracts me too much.

The sincerity of it.

An angel peers out at me from behind her eyes and I know if given the chance, I’d shred her fluffy wings and tarnish her halo.

“I have,” she says.

A bark of laughter escapes my chest. “Now you’re just delusional. You need sleep.”

“A bad guy wouldn’t have given a shit that I was having a panic attack, both times, and attempted to calm me down. Not the way you did, at least. A bad guy wouldn’t have punched some other guy for almost knocking me over.”

“That’s where you’re wrong. I enjoy fighting and took advantage of an opportunity.”

“Uh-huh. We can go with that. But then explain to me why a bad guy would care that I’m hiding. That I’m scared so much. Wouldn’t a bad guy use that to his advantage and make my fears worse to get what he wants?”

A grin tilts my lips. “I’m shocked.”

Brinley pulls her hand away, and I damn near grab her wrist to place it back on my cheek where it fucking belongs.

What the hell is wrong with me that I’m thinking like that?

“Shocked about what?”

“You admitted you’re hiding. I was right.”

When she glares at me, every drop of blood in my body rushes to my dick. I’m so turned on by something so small that I’m practically vibrating. The effect she has on me isn’t natural.

Nerdy Ninja Witch.

Her new superhero name.

There’s no other explanation for it.

The silence between is deafening now, way too drawn out, and I’m getting itchy for her to say or do something before I lose my shit.

That’s the thing with her that drives me the craziest... You never know what she’s thinking.

With Brinley, you can swear she’s about to turn left when in the next second she surprises you by dodging right.

And with almost every other person, I could figure them out in no time flat. A simple five-minute observation and I could detail their likes and dislikes, what they’re proud of and what makes them ashamed. I could tell you what they’re thinking, feeling, what decisions they’ll make or what they’ve been through in life.

Because people are easy.

But not Brinley.

She may hide in life, but it’s given her the ability to shock and surprise someone as keenly observant as me.

She shocks me even now, then does something that is so dangerous for us both that I would be a good guy to jump out of this bed and move away.
