"Maybe next time we should just get drinks on the way in," I say."I can do it."Especially as I hate the idea of owning anyone for a drink, having the second round will make me feel better about that.

"Sounds good," Erica responds."We'll start a group chat and sort it all out in advance.I can set it up."She clicks a few buttons on her phone and holds it out.

I pull up the QR code for my own details and hold it out to her.She scans it, followed by doing the same with Carlton and Darius.

"All right, that's all done," Erica says.

The notification pops up on my screen and I click on it, pulling up the group chat, though there's nothing in it yet.

"Thanks for the drink," I say to Carlton, picking up my cup and taking a sip, almost burning my tongue in the process.

"No problem. Thanks for the next one," he says.

"All right, so what are we supposed to be talking about?"Darius asked.

I run my finger down my notes from the lecture, reminding myself of all the questions I had.I liked to think of myself as reasonably smart, but I felt differently after an hour of listening to the lecture."There was a bit about turned supernaturals that I didn't really understand when Professor Florian was talking about."I feel a little exposed admitting I didn't understand something. But what's the point of coming to a study group if I'm not going to flag those moments?

"Which part was it?"Carlton responds.

"I think it was specifically about the differences between turned and born types of the same supernatural, but I don't really understand how that works," I respond.

"Oh, that's pretty straightforward," Carlton responds, pushing his dark green hair out of his face."So basically, it's because turned supernaturals often have the trauma to go with their turning.Drowning can have that effect on you."A haunted expression crosses his face.

My cheeks flame red."You're mer?"

He grimaces."Since I was fourteen. It took a lot of therapy to move past the whole thing.I think that's what the professor was getting at when he was saying that they were different."

"I'm sorry," I say, unable to come up with anything else to say to that.

He shrugs."I'm over it."

I look down at the sheet of notes in front of me and try not to get too embarrassed about the way the conversation has gone.

Erica starts talking to Carlton about one of the other subject points and I try to focus on my notes.

"You know you shouldn't feel bad about your question, right?"Darius asks me softly.

"Then why do I?"I fiddle with my pen, trying not to feel too self-conscious about the faux-pas.

"Because it's easy to put your foot in it with things like this," he says.

"And I did just that."

"I did it with my vampire flatmate too," he responds."I went on and on about it with no idea that he was a turned vampire.I felt like an idiot for weeks."

I grimace."Ah, yeah, maybe not the best."

"I actedsoweird around him until he told me to stop and I was the one making it awkward."

Despite knowing I shouldn't, I let out an amused laugh."So don't do that with Carlton, right?"

"Pretty much."He shrugs.

"I'm not really sure that's helpful."

"Then it's a good job we're dealing with supernatural psychology.Maybe we just need to look up what kind of supernatural you are and the best kind of way to get through to you."

I snort."I think my mum would pitch a fit if she found out I was getting psychoanalysed, even by a therapist in training."
