"Then maybe you can go sit and be boring together, Jake," Lewis growled, and Melody's interest was piqued, though she wasn't quite sure why.

Jake, so that is his name, she thought before dismissing it entirely. Why did it matter to her what his name was?

"I think you've had a little too much to drink, Lew, let's get you home," Jake suggested. The sound of scuffling suggested Lewis had no intention of going home.

"If I pot this you go and take your shot," Lewis insisted, and in the next moment Melody heard the heavy clank of pool balls clashing together followed by one sinking into the pocket.

"Woohoo! Go get her, wolfie!" Lewis cheered, and Melody's stomach clenched. The fact she was the only female in the bar left her under no illusions as to who they were talking about. Her shoulders tensed as she sensed Jake making his way toward her.

"I never actually agreed to the bet," he grumbled under his breath as he approached.

Melody prepared herself for another run-in, ready to reject whatever kind of pass he tried to make at her.

But when he stood behind her and whispered, "Please just go along with this to shut him up?" she couldn't help but smile.

More loudly he added, "You look like you could use something a little stronger than that."

Melody scoffed, "There isn't much stronger than whisky."

"Not if you're human," Jake said, and gestured over the barman before he said, "Fetch a bottle of the good stuff."

The secretive look that passed between the two men intrigued Melody, not to mention the fact that Jake really was ten times more attractive than his asshole friend.

"Mind if I sit?" Jake asked, gesturing to the stool beside her.

"Go ahead," Melody said, downing the drink the barman had poured while she was asking them to turn the volume down. "I was just leaving anyway."

She was surprised by the look of disappointment on Jake's face. It made him look young, almost puppy-dog like. But just like that, it was gone again, and he huffed, "Guess I blew my shot then, aye?"

Those striking blue eyes bore into Melody and made her insides tingle. She tried to fight it, but her interests were piqued. And deep down, she was fed up with feeling like trash.

What the hell?she thought, shrugging her shoulders as she suggested, "Maybe you'd be up for walking me home? It's only a block away."

The surprise on Jake's face mirrored Melody's own. Never in a million years would she have accepted a guy picking her up in a bar. And yet, here she was.

"Are you sure?" Jake asked, rising from his stool. "I mean, I'd be happy to but…areyousure?"

Melody didn't allow herself the chance to think about it. She nodded, her lips twitching upwards in a smile. What harm could it do?

Besides, she needed to blow off some steam before the direness of her situation truly sunk in. It might be her last chance to have any fun before she was forced to suck up her pride and ask the pack for help.

Taking a deep breath, she changed her mind entirely and asked, "My place or yours?"

There was only one true way for a werewolf to let off real steam, and that was in the bedroom. She could think of worse partners than him to do that with—like his friend Lewis, for example.

"Get in!" she heard Lewis howl from across the bar, and her skin crawled, but she had gone too far to turn back now.

Her insides were already heating with the desire to lose herself in matters of the flesh, just for a little while, just to stop her mind from reeling. It was time she let another body part take over for a while.

"I'm staying at the Wolf Den just down the street," Jake said. "I'd be happy to share a nightcap."

The thought of not being quite so alone for the night drew her in. Her she-wolf craved the closeness of another wolf, and for tonight, Jake was it.

"I'm game if you are," she said, zipping up her jacket even though she didn't really feel the cold.

Still looking a little shocked, Jake led her out of the bar after having paid for an entire bottle of 'the good stuff'.

It was only when they were halfway to the Wolf Den that he slowed his pace and said, "Okay, you can drop the act now. Lewis can't hear us. Let me take you home."
