Melody considered it only a moment before she shook her head. "I haven't been in the Wolf Den since I first arrived in Silverdale. I'd be interested to see if it’s changed any. Besides, I think your friend is right. I could use a little fun—that is, if you're up for it?"

Melody's cheeks heated even as Jake's eyes widened.

"In that case," he said, twisting the cork off the bottle he held, "Sounds like we'll both be needing a little liquid courage tonight."

He took a swig before handing the bottle to her.

"Is that your way of saying I frighten you?" she chuckled, taking a swig herself.

The liquid was so strong it caught in the back of her throat and almost made her gag. But once she had gotten used to it, she realized the taste was hot and sweet and it made her tingle all over. It was likely the closest a werewolf could ever feel to being drunk, and she had to admit, she liked it, though she knew it would wear off shortly.

"On the contrary, I'm scared I'll fuck this up," he growled under his breath, and Melody was shocked when instead of taking the bottle back from her, he gripped hold of her face in both his hands.

His lips landed on hers so quickly she barely had a chance to catch her breath. And just like that, she felt her she-wolf howling inside, begging to be released, a sign that this was exactly what she needed.

She kissed him back with no clue what havoc a one-night stand with a Silverdale wolf could cause.

Chapter 1 - Jake

One Month Later

"Hey, watch it! Those are fragile!"

Jake lunged for the box of crystal glasses that Lewis yanked out of his truck.

"Jeez, since when did you get so damn uptight?" Lewis asked, relinquishing the box into Jake's care. Jake glowered back at his friend. He knew very well why Jake was as he was lately. And he wasn't about to apologize for it after all the shit he had been through.

Instead, he rolled his eyes and adjusted the box in his grip before he turned to make his way to the new two-bedroom townhouse he had just secured for himself, as far away from his ex-wife as possible.

"You know, you really need to cheer up," Lewis said, following him with a less fragile box in hand. "I'd have thought after a year of divorce proceedings and finally being freed you'd be a bit happier by now."

Free?Jake thought bitterly. If this was how free felt, he wasn't sure he wanted it. If anything, he was lonely and down, two things that hit werewolves extremely hard. Though he would always have his pack, Lewis among them, the loss of what he thought his life would be had hit him hard.

"Give me a break, Lew," he snarled, placing the fragile box on the breakfast bar before he headed out to grab the next one.

It was as he leaned in to grab it from the bed of his truck that he heard the sound of a front door opening in the next garden over.

The next thing he knew, Lewis had let out a wolf-whistle. "Well, I'll be damned. Are you sure you don't need a roommate?"

Knowing his best friend, Jake understood Lewis's tone well. He didn't even need to look across the fence to know that the person who had left the house next door was likely highly attractive.

"Will you ever quit being such a hornball?" Jake asked.

Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Lewis shrug. "If you aren't going to check out your neighbor, I'll do it for you."

Again, Jake rolled his eyes and grabbed the next box, wondering why he even bothered asking for Lewis's help. He always was more of a hindrance, especially when there were women in the general vicinity.

Preparing himself to do the rest of the hard work on his own, he glanced after his friend with the mere intention of finding out whether he was about to watch him get rejected or not.

Yet, when he caught sight of the woman wandering down her garden path with a heavy box in her arms, Jake's heart stopped.

Though it had been a month since their night together, he recognized her immediately.

Melody,he thought, his throat tightening.

"Hey there, beautiful, how about I help you with that?" Lewis offered, hopping over the fence.

Without so much as glancing in his direction, Melody responded, "I got it, thanks."
