“I’m feeling a lot better, but I needed to see you.”

Belatedly, he remembered they were standing outside his door, and he stepped back to hold the door open for her. As she walked by, he inhaled her scent, the woman he loved beyond measure. He followed her down the hall, and she stopped just inside the living room. Thoughts of the last time they were here flooded his mind, and he wished he could go back to that moment when she was in his arms, kissing him with passion. Instead, they both stood waiting for her to seal their fate.

“I love you too.”

His heart stopped, his body froze, and his words stuck in his throat.

“I love you, and I’m sorry I pushed you away. I think you must still love me, or you wouldn’t have done all that work at the warehouse. Not that you don’t care for the cause, but it was a lot of work to do. And since you kept sending me those white roses, I think that means I still have a chance at convincing you to give me a second chance.”

“Without a doubt, I still love you,” he said, finally forcing the words out. “I always have.”

She let out a deep breath and started tugging at the tie on the side of her dress. She pulled back one side and then the other to reveal her lush curves in a dark blue one-piece of lingerie that bordered on obscene.

“Good, because this can’t be returned.”

She pushed the dress over her shoulders and let the material fall to the floor.

Without another word, his hands were on her, and their mouths met with a passion born from days apart and uncertainty. He lifted her up, and her legs wrapped around his waist as he pressed her back against the bookshelf. Her desire for him was fuel to the fire he felt growing, a need so strong he wasn’t sure they would make it to the bedroom. She fumbled with the buttons on his shirt and tugged at the hem.

“I want to feel all of you,” she said.

Setting her bottom on the thick shelf, he leaned back to rip off his shirt. She kissed his arm where he still had a bandage on his stitches, and over his chest. Her hands roamed his body before landing on his belt. As she made haste with his clothes, he explored her curves wrapped in the delicate silk. He pulled down the fabric, spilling her breasts over the bodice, and his mouth was on her. She writhed all the while slipping her hand into his briefs. He was hard and aching for her. Taking his hand, she moved it between her legs where he found a convenient cut in the material.

“This is the best version of sorry I’ve ever experienced. In fact, you have my permission to misbehave as much as possible if this is how you want to apologize in the future.”

“I’ll remember that,” she said before her mouth was back on his. Their love was a tidal wave, with each swell giving more pleasure and raising the stakes of their ultimate pleasure. When they were both wrung out and covered in each other’s sweat and kisses, he carried her back to his room. He didn’t want to say anything and ruin the moment.

Hannah looked satisfied sprawled out on his bed, but there was worry in her eyes.

“Don’t. Let’s just enjoy tonight. Like any couple in love that doesn’t need to worry about how it will all work out.”

He crawled over her, covering her with his hips. He found several ribbons running down the blue silk still covering her torso.

“Now I would like to concentrate on properly unwrapping this gift you’ve given me before I indulge in it again.”

Her laugh filled the room, and her hips pressed up against his again.

“The gift that keeps on giving,” she said.

Later that night, as Hannah slept, Conner couldn’t help but worry about what they hadn’t said. He and Hannah had spent the night making love and talking about places they wanted to go together, living in a bubble that didn’t include family drama. But what he didn’t know was whether she’d decided to go against her brother. And what would that look like for her? A sense of foreboding clung to him, and he hugged Hannah tighter to him.

The next morning, he woke to another surprise as Hannah’s mouth explored his body. Before he knew it, their bodies melded together, moving in sync as they each found more pleasure.

Much later, he awoke to the sound of the shower. Exhausted from the last few days, he made his way to the kitchen and started the coffee. When his phone dinged, he looked around to find it. Their clothes were still in the living room where they’d discarded them, and he found his phone in his pants pocket. There were a dozen missed calls and texts.

Several risqué messages with pictures from Mariah popped up on his screen. He quickly closed them. He hadn’t had a chance to explain his plan to Hannah, and today was the main event. She was going to be busy with the gala. He didn’t want to pop their love bubble with talks about cornering Mariah into confessing her dirty tricks. It all seemed so juvenile at this point.

“Hey, do you want to grab breakfast on the way over to the warehouse?” she said walking up behind him.

With a start, he set his phone face down on the counter.

“I do, but I have to meet with the lawyers one more time this morning. They have a few more follow-up questions on the raid. Somehow, getting shot earned me more inquisition than the rest of the raid team.”

“Oh, okay. Will you be able to meet me at the gala before it starts at seven?”

“Yes, about that.”

She leaned against him and ran her hands up his chest.
