“I’m not planning to be away for any length of time again,dolcezza,” he said as I slid my hand to the back of his neck.“Anywhere else I go, I want to go with you.”
There was no way to stop the smile from breaking out on my face, but I had to just check one thing before I got too excited.“Are you sure about this?I want you to do this for you, not because you think it’s what I want.”
He shook his head, his eyes intense on mine.“I’m done with long distance and longer trips.This was my eleventh year of travelling, and I want to be closer to you now.”
“Okay, but if you change your mind-”
He silenced me with a kiss.“Nova.I’ve been on the road for a long time.There were places I loved and had the best times, but I was still always thinking about where I would go next.I love my mum and dad, but every time I visited them, I had my mind on getting away somewhere else within a couple of days.When I’m with you, there is nowhere else I want to be.The places I’ve been to since I’ve been with you were some of the best ever, but I wanted to come home.It physically hurts to be away from you for too long.”He smiled, looking deeper into my eyes to offer reassurance.“I won’t change my mind.My future is with you.”
Gazing up at him, my eyes wet with happy tears, I said, “Seems like you’ve put a lot of thought into this.”
“I didn’t need to.”He placed a kiss on the end of my nose, then another on my lips.“I’ve wanted this since the first time I told you I love you, and that isn’t going to change until I take my last breath.”
My heart swelled, entirely full in that moment.I hoped our last breaths were a substantially long time away because I felt the same.Like the moment those words first left our lips, we’d already begun to re-write our futures so they aligned instead of ripping us away from each other.Now, nobody could do that.
Now, we’d both found our home.
Not next door, but together at last.
