She smacked his chest and pulled away from him.

Seth mirrored my reaction and lunged toward Kaleb, but Mason intervened.

"It's a joke!" Kaleb laughed hysterically when he was pulled away.

"I'll fucking castrate you, you fucker, if you ever go near my sister," Seth threatened.

"Dude, calm down." Mason pushed him back until he was standing beside Scar. "It's a stupid joke, he's kidding."

"Seth." Scar pulled on his arm, forcing him to look down at her. His face softened like every time he comforted her when she went through her moments.

"He's kidding," she reassured him.

"You know I would never hurt your sister, man," Kaleb said, rubbing his hands down his crew cut he got the other day. "She's my little squirt."

Scar rolled her eyes.

Seth visibly relaxed and pulled her into a hug. "But you're still coming with us."

She laughed against his chest.

On the way to the cabin, Scar sat in the back seat, squished between Kaleb and Mason, while Seth sat in the front. Skylar had been texting me nonstop since we left the house. She was pissed that I didn't include her on the guys’ weekend getaway. But let's face it, the guys weren't exactly chomping at the bit to have her around. And while I didn't feel like I was missing out on anything by not inviting her, when Scar got an invite, I was thrilled.

I glanced at her through the mirror, watching her head bop up and down to the music flowing through her buds. Scar always had this innocence about her but with a little edge. She would be a knockout when she got older and then she’d probably start to date the wrong guys, getting her first sloppy kiss from a game of truth or dare and losing her virginity on prom night. The unsettling feelings those images brought rumbled against my chest. I didn’t know how I felt about that.

Once we pulled up to the cabin and settled in, we decided to ride the bikes before sundown. Ever since our arrival, Scar had been holed up in her room.

I heard her talking on the phone when I walked past her room, but I couldn't make out what she was saying or who she was talking to. As if on cue, my Tinkerbelle strolled out of the house wearing jeans with rips on the thigh and knee areas. Her tank top was replaced with a tight black short sleeved top. I could see the outline of her breasts.

I quickly looked away and focused on pulling my gloves on.

"Whatcha doing, little Rose?" Kaleb sang, downing a bottle of water. He was the only one who called her by her middle name because he knew she hated it. She said it made her feel old.

I looked back at Scar as her eyes rolled.

"She's riding with us," Seth said in a 'you're not staying here alone' tone.

"More like forced to," she grumbled, tapping her foot on the ground and arms across her chest, pushing her boobs up.

I had to get the hell out of there. I pulled the helmet over my head, grabbed the handlebars, and swung my legs over the seat. Before I could start the bike, Seth cried out, "Yo, Mav!" He walked toward me with his helmet in hand.

"Yeah?"

Seth walked right up to me and turned to look over his shoulder at Scar, who looked like she was going to commit her first murder and without any regrets.

"I need you to teach her how to ride."

What?

"Why can't you?" I asked, holding back my excitement at being that close to Scar.

"Because, man, you're the best rider, and I don’t want her to be mad at me for making her come this weekend."

I pulled my helmet off and stared into my best friend's blue eyes, the friend who was like a brother to me, watching the sadness swirling around his pupils. Scar seemed to be going through a rebellious stage, and her episodes were getting worse. Her sadness weighed heavily on him and her actions deeply affected him. He was determined to find a way to relieve her pain and bring her comfort.

How could I say no to a guy who loved his sister wholeheartedly and would do anything to protect her?
