I sighed and walked toward her. "I wasn't expecting to see you since this is my time with the guys."

"Really? Then what is Scar doing here?"

"She's family." I shrugged.

"I'mfamily too," she argued.

Frustrated, I ran my hands down my face and rubbed my jaw. "Seth invited her. This is his family's cabin—his mother’s—so I don't get a say in his decision, Skye."

The front door opened, and I looked over my shoulder to see Seth leaning against the post, bringing his beer to cover up his cocky smirk.

"Aren't you a long way from the Hyatt?" Seth mocked.

Skye crossed her arms over her chest and cocked her hip. "Real nice, brother."

"I'm not your fucking brother, and you are sure as hell not welcome here."

As she turned her gaze away, her eyes shimmered with emotion, and a pained expression crept onto her face, as if she was holding back tears.

With a sigh, I walked down the steps and pulled her into my chest. She didn’t hesitate to wrap her arms around my waist. She smelled like peonies and nothing like peaches.

I glared at Seth. "It's dark out. Can she say the night, and we'll leave in the morning?"

He shot me a dark look as his blue eyes shifted between me and Skye.

"Right." Seth nodded a few times. "I forget what a jealous and manipulative bitch she can be."

"Enough!" I shouted, causing Skye to jolt in my arms.

I put her on a pedestal for the longest time to make it easier to deal with her cattiness, jealousy, and the tension between her siblings. Skylar was lost—unable to find a place to fit in, especially when it came down to family. It wouldn't be fair to compare her to Scar. Whereas Scar was badass and could handle her own, Skylar needed to be dealt with delicately. I felt bad that Scar had an army of people who loved her and would do anything for her, including myself. But Skylar didn’t have an army—she only had me.

"What the fuck ever." Seth whipped the door open and took a step inside. "Just keep her away from Scar," he barked and slammed the door shut.

Mason sighed and took a swig from his beer. "It's going to be a long freaking weekend." He followed Seth.

"Get your things. You can stay with me in my room," I told Skye. She pulled back, wiped the tears from her face, and smiled. "I love you," she whispered and placed a soft kiss on my cheek. I returned the smile but not the feelings.

Mason was right. This was going to be a long ass weekend.

After eating Scar's delicious dinner, we dispersed to separate rooms. The tension at the table was suffocating. I tried getting quick glimpses of Scar, but Skye would avert my attention by grabbing my thigh or making small talk.

When it was time to go to bed, I couldn't fall asleep, and it wasn't because Skye was lying next to me. I wanted to spend more time with Scar and check in on her. With my hand underneath my head, I saw a flicker of light from the corner of my eye. I heard faint footsteps walking across the hardwood floor.

I glanced down at Skye's sleeping form and gingerly slid away from her. I grabbed my shirt, pulled up my jeans, and quietly walked out the door.

I padded down the hall until I reached the kitchen. An easy smile formed on my face as I took in Scar in the kitchen, pouring herself a glass of water and quietly singing "Alone" by Heart. She spun around too quickly, and her eyes widened when she saw me.

I chuckled and held my hands up. "Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you."

She walked over to the refrigerator and pulled out a tray of fresh fruits. Using her hip, she closed the fridge door and placed the tray on the table. "Couldn't sleep?" she asked, reaching for a strawberry and bringing it to her lips before biting into it.

I cleared my throat. "Yeah. Is that why you’re up?"

She nodded and grabbed another strawberry. My eyes involuntarily moved to her pink lips. "Do you want one?" she asked, holding a strawberry out.

I gave her a small smile. “No thanks, Tinkerbelle.”
