"You good?"

When she gave me the okay to continue, I told her, "Put it in gear and slowly let the clutch out, giving it a little bit of gas."

The dirt bike roared to life as she twisted the throttle, sending the sound of the engine echoing through the air.

"Whoa, whoa! If you give it too much gas, you'll fall backward."

We both laughed.

"Thank you, Ricky," she said through her giggles.

"For what?"

She turned to face me with a look of adoration and offered me a small smile. "For doing this with me. For being my friend."

Right.My friend.

That was all we could ever be.

Iremoved my muddy boots and set them down outside the door. The sound of Scar's laughter that warmed the pit inside my chest was the first thing I heard when I walked into the kitchen. The kitchen was empty, but the smell from the food on the stove filled the room, making my mouth water. I followed the voices to the living room, where Scar and Seth were playing a virtual reality game. The lingering feeling came to life, the one that grew whenever she was nearby.

Mason and Kaleb had drinks in their hands, laughing at the scene in front of them. I smiled when Mason noticed me. "Which game are they playing?" I asked, entertained by the oversized white headset overtaking Scar's face as its hostage.

"One of the zombie games," Mason said with a huge grin.

It was pretty comical to watch Scar's little body flying around, almost smacking into the furniture and whacking Seth in the head. She screamed on cue, all of us laughing as she toppled right into my arms.

"Easy," I said with a chuckle, grasping her underneath her arms. My fingers brushed against the side of her boobs, and I froze. She shivered at my touch. Scar righted herself and removed the headset. Her face was red, and her chest heaved while she rapidly panted as she tried to steady her breathing.

I tucked my hands into my pockets and took a step back. "Smells good." I cleared my throat, needing a distraction.

"Thanks. I made beef stew and biscuits. We were waiting for you," she said, wiping the loose strands of hair from her face.

A throat cleared, drawing me away from Scar. I glanced behind her and noticed Kaleb looking out the window. "Are you expecting anyone else?” Kaleb asked.

As we neared the window, our attention was drawn to a red sports car that pulled into the driveway.

"You gotta be fucking kidding me. Really, Mav?"

I glanced at him, confused, and looked back at the mystery visitor. My gut churned when I recognized the long pair of black boots stepping out of the driver's seat.

Skylar.

"What the hell is she doing here?" Seth gritted out.

"I'll go find out," I told him, glancing over my shoulder to see Scar had disappeared.

Ignoring the guys' bitching, I walked out the front door and met Skye at the bottom of the steps.

"What are you doing here?" She jumped back, bringing her hand to her chest.

"Jesus, Mav. You scared me."

"What are you doing here?" I repeated.

"Nice to see you too," she grumbled.
