"Who is it?" I ask as I slowly make my way towards the door.

"It's me, Doodlebug."

Dad.

I grumble, making my way to the shit storm that awaits me, pulling my hair up in a messy bun. When I swing the door open, there stands my sperm donor. He's wearing a light gray suit with a vest, charcoal tie, and flat black shoes. Looking at Dad, I can't help but notice that he and Skylar share the same blond-brown hair and blue eyes. I step onto the porch, closing the door behind me. "What are you doing here,Derick?" I cross my arms over my chest with my chin held up.

He loosens his tie. "I wish you would call me dad." There's sadness behind his words, but I quickly shut it down.

"Sure. Once andifyou earn the title back."

He sighs. "I came to check on you since you haven't returned my calls since you've been home."

"Well, there's a reason for that. Maybe I don't want to talk to you."

He nods. "Okay, I understand. I miss you, Scar."

I scoff and roll my eyes. "You should've thought about that before you abandoned us."

"Sweetheart, I didn't come here to fight," he says quietly. "I've already apologized for my mistake."

Unbelievable.

"Fine. You said you're sorry. Are we done now?"

"No, we are not." He drops his head to his chest and shakes it. When he lifts it, his gaze full of pain, he adds, "I know I screwed up and hurt you, but I want to find a way to move forward. You can't hate me forever."

"Try me."

He flinches, a tormented look on his face. It has a mixture of pain, anguish, and desperation. It seems as if he is trying to hide a deep sense of sorrow that has been eating him up from the inside. His eyes are red and puffy, and his lips are tightly pressed together, like he is trying hard not to cry. "I miss him too." His words are but a whisper. "I think about him every day, wishing I could turn back time.”

I wish you would stop talking.

"He was my son. I will never forgive myself for what I've done. Please, don't shut me out."

I don't say a word. What is there to say? He broke this family in the worst possible way and expected us to do what? Forgive him and pretend he didn't ruin us?

No, fuck that.

"Why now?"

"Does there have to be a reason?" He glances away, and his shoulders drop with a sigh.

He turns back to me. "Sweetheart, I'm so sorry for everything." He sucks in a breath. "I didn't mean to hurt you or your brother."

Damnit, I know he's sorry. I see the anguish in his eyes and the unshed tears. Dad loves us, but his cheating on Mom and hurting Seth doesn't make up for it. I get that we are all imperfect and human, but he needs to give us time to heal and move past the pain he inflicted on all of us. In one night, he threw us away like nothing. Am I strong enough to forgive and give him another chance?

Shari, Maverick's mom's car pulls up into her driveway at the same time Dad's phone goes off. When he answers it, the need to move past all this bullshit is long gone.

"Hey.” Pause. “Yeah, I'll meet you there."

And the fucked-up part of what's happening, like right now? He's looking atmewhile talking toher.

"Yeah, you need to leave," I say with no emotion.

"Scar, please—" he pleads with urgency and desperation in his voice, but I have nothing to give. Does he not understand?

"Goodbye, Derick."
