A little boy, maybe five years old, runs out of the store with Scar's mom rushing out behind him. With my heart in my throat, he jumps into Scar’s arms and buries his head in her neck.

What the hell?

Scar's got a kid?

When did she have a baby?

Why didn't my parents say anything?

"Maverick? Is that you?" Olivia, Scar's mom, hasn't aged a bit.

"Hi, Olivia."

She hugs me tightly. "Oh, it's so good to see you." She pulls away and smiles. "Congratulations on your new TV show."

"Thanks."

"How long are you in town?" she asks.

I glance over to see Scar watching me intently with her son wrapped around her petite frame like a little monkey.

I turn back to Olivia. "Not sure yet. I'm hoping for a few weeks."

"That's wonderful. I bet your parents are happy to see you stick around for a while."

As I nod, I can't help but feel a twinge of regret. Scar's once joyful expression now appears marred by a hint of sadness. I wish she were as happy to see me as she used to be, but I know I can't blame her. After all, I was the one who left her. "Who's the man, Mommy?" the little boy asks. He lifts his head from her shoulder and stares at me with piercing blue eyes.

"I'm a friend of your mom's," I say, taking a step toward her. It guts me how Scar cages her son in a protective stance the closer I get to her.

She doesn't trust me.

"Hey, little man. My name is Maverick. What's yours?" I hold my hand out, and surprisingly, he takes it without hesitation.

"Hi. I'm Shaun."

I grab his little hand in mine and shake it. "Nice to meet you, Shaun."

He gives me a toothy smile, making me grin like an idiot. This kid is part of Scar, and I already love him.

He pulls his brown curls away from his face and turns to his mom. "Can we have ice cream now?"

Scar smiles—a brilliant smile that takes my breath away and makes me wish I was the reason for it being there. "After pizza." She kisses his cheek and wraps his arms around her neck.

"We should get going," Olivia says, then turns to me. "It's so good to see you, Maverick. Maybe we can have dinner while you're here."

Scar scoffs and looks away, making me grin, but Olivia gives her a warning glare.

"I'd like that."

She smiles and walks away.

"Bye, Ricky!" Shaun waves at me, and my heart drops into my gut.

Ricky. He called me Ricky the way Scar used to.

I swallow hard. "Bye, Shaun."

Scar looks into my eyes, and the pain in hers mirrors the pain that must be in mine. I feel like my heart is being ripped from my chest. The pain is too much to handle. I fucking miss her.
