Shaun turned to Scar, seeking her approval, and she smiled, "Of course, you can. Why don't you tell your grandpa what you like with your popcorn?"

Shaun turned to me and beamed. "Mom, let me add nuts and M&M's to mine!" he exclaimed.

I turned to my daughter with a smile. "That's interesting because I eat my popcorn that way, too," I said, feeling connected with my grandson.

My gaze remained fixed on my daughter, and tears glistened in her eyes.

"Come on!" Shaun urges, taking my hand and practically dragging me to the kitchen. I shoot a quick glance towards Scar and silently mouth the words 'I love you.'

She wipes away her tears and nods. "I love you too, Dad," she whispered.

My heart swelled with love and gratitude as I realized I had been given a second chance with my family. I vowed to do everything I could to make things right and cherish every moment with them.

THIRTY-NINE

SCAR

Today has been one hell of an emotional shitstorm.

I threw up several times.

After he revealed the horrible truths, I cried like a baby for the damage Tiffany caused this family. From Seth's death, Mom and Dad's divorce, to my guilt from treating Dad like crap and keeping him away from his only grandchild.

Hedid nothing wrong.

It was allher.

The thought makes me sick all over again.

Dad appeared hesitant about sharing his secret, almost as if he was standing at the edge of a cliff, looking out at the vast expanse of the ocean, and considering whether to take the leap. I could tell that he was deeply hurt. The things that Tiffany had done to him were like a knife to the heart. As he spoke, I saw the pain in his eyes and the damage that her actions caused. Shortly after the incident, Tiffany left the state, and no one has heard from her. My father surprised me by deciding not to press charges. His decision confused me, but he quickly clarified that he worried about the impact it could have on our family, especially for Mom. Although his decision caught me off guard, I respected his choice.

How can he ever forgive me for treating him as if he was nothing?

In the last few hours, I watched as Dad and Shaun gravitated toward each other, forming a special connection that is nothing short of magical. It's hard to put into words the depth of their relationship, but it's evident in how they light up when they are together. Shaun has always been a child full of love and affection, never hesitating to express his emotions. It's as if his warm and welcoming nature was meant to bring people happiness and comfort.

Like Seth.

"Do you have to leave, Pop?" Shaun asks, his voice barely above a whisper.

Dad crouches to his level and puts a hand on his shoulder. "I'll make sure to visit more often, buddy. We can go out for some pizza and ice cream. How does that sound?"

Shaun's eyes lit up excitedly as he looked up at Dad. "Can we go today?" he asked eagerly.

Dad softly chuckles. "Not today, but definitely this weekend."

Shaun's face lights up with joy. "Okay."

"Good. I'm looking forward to it." Dad said, ruffling Shaun's hair affectionately.

As I approached my dad, I noticed Mom walking in behind him. "Dad, since you and Mom were working on your marriage, I thought you would be moving back home."

Dad looked at me with a pained expression, his eyes filled with uncertainty. “Scar, things are more complicated than they seem.”

I glanced over at mom, who had been silently watching the exchange unfold. Our eyes briefly met, and I could see the weariness etched into her expression.

“Dad, after what you been through, it doesn't make sense for you to stay away. You should be home, with your family."

“I miss being home too, Scar. More than you know.” He turns to Mom and then back to me, “But right now, your mom and I are still trying to figure things out. There's a lot we need to work through before we can make any decisions about me coming home. I know it's hard to understand, Scar, but your mom and I are doing everything we can to make things right.”
