Page 98 of A Second Chance

My dick hardens when my eyes land on a beautiful pink haired Madonna. The first picture is of Scar and Gem smiling at the camera with a drink in each hand. When I slide to the next photo, it’s a picture of two guys with their arms around Scar’s shoulders. My hand squeezes the phone so tight it could break it in half. The last photo is of Scar with a mic in her hand, looking like a sexy rock star with half of her pink hair spiked up, and a tight black sequin dress that hits above her knees, along with dangling necklaces and bracelets. This is the first time I’ve seen her free and happy since Seth passed away. My chest tightens when I realize the alcohol and meds she’s on don’t mix well together.

I toss the phone to Mase. “Let’s go.”

“Oh, it’s so on! Fuck, this is going to be epic.” Mason hoots. “It’s high school/college all over again.”

I toss my half-drunk beer in the trash on the way back to the house. Grabbing my phone, keys, and wallet, I slide into my car with Mase hoping in.

Time to make an ass out of myself.

* * *

We walk into Gypsies’ Bar, and the place is decked out in orange and black decorations.

“What’s our plan?” Mason yells over the music.

I pull my hat over my eyes as a disguise, not wanting the media to get a hold of this, especially if I’m going to act like a possessive asshole.

“What do you mean?” I ask, searching for Scar. My heart rate settles when I spot her and Gem on the stage singing karaoke. I can’t help the smile forming on my face. Whenever she sings, she lights up the whole room. Seth used to say she was her own set of Christmas lights. That’s how beautiful she is when she’s pouring her heart out.

We walk up to the bar and close to the stage, but not too close for them to see us. I lean against the bar when Mason hands me a bottle of water.

When the song “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” comes on, I smile. It was Scar’s favorite song as a kid. Seth acted like it drove him crazy whenever she sang and danced around the house, but deep down he loved it. It was one of the signs that she was having a good day.

When the music starts, Scar doesn’t hold back.

She looks happy. Music and art have always been her center—something that can keep her grounded. She used to say that it was when she felt most alive—free from the demons in her head. When I was sixteen, I would sit outside her window and listen to her sing even though I pretended that I never heard her do it. I felt a strong connection with her through the music—the sound of her voice.

As soon as the song ends, the crowd goes crazy.

She’s breathtaking.

Scar and Gem walk off the stage and head toward the dance floor when “Wanna Dance with Somebody”by Whitney Houston comes on. Once the song ends, they make their way to the bar. I’m on the other end where the lighting is pretty dark so she can’t see me.

But I see her.

And the sweat glistening on her skin.

For the last twenty minutes, she’s been flirting with every guy who has walked up to her and offered to buy her a drink. But my girl is smart and doesn’t accept anything unless it came directly from the bartender.

She sways her hips back and forth to“Better off Alone”by Alan Walker Dash Berlin and Vikkstar. I grind my teeth as I watch every douchebag flock to her like bees to honey.

“When are you going to get your head out of your ass and go talk to her?” Mason smirks as he downs the rest of his beer.

She’s prey out in the open for any predator to snatch her up, including me.

My hand grips the neck of the bottle as I watch Ryan Ford from high school make his move onmy girl.

Jesus, again with this my girl shit.

“Dude.” Mason bumps my shoulder. “Stop moping and go after the girl you’ve always wanted.”

I shake my head. As much as I want Scar, I can’t watch other guys make a play on her, even if I can’t have her.

It’s killing me.

"So what? She's not a teenager anymore. Don't give Ryan the green light to make his move; otherwise, you won't get your chance."

I counter with a jab. "Just like you and Gem, right?"
