“Because we have grown-up things to talk about.”

He tilted his head. “What kind of things?”

“Important things, like plans for your birthday party,” Tomcat replied. “You can’t hear about it, or it won’t be a surprise.”

Rockson’s eyes went wide. “Okay!” He ran out of the room and to his bedroom. The door slammed shut a second later.

“Thank you.” I turned toward Tomcat. Before Rocky returned, I would’ve jumped Tomcat’s bones and ravaged him. I couldn’t do that now. My feelings had changed overnight. Instead, I stared adoringly at him. He was one of the few people I trusted in the world.

“For the kiss or for helping with Rockson?” A cocky grin tugged at the corners of his tantalizing lips.

Cade knew he wasall thatand more. The fixer. The supporter and protector. The lover in my life. Without him, I wouldn’t have survived some of my darkest days after Rockson was born. But above all that, he was my friend.

“Both.” I placed my hand on his firm chest. “You’ve always been there for me, and I appreciate you more than I can say.”

“Don’t get mushy on me now.” He winked and cupped my shoulders. “I’ll be in the back. If anything goes wrong, scream, and I will be here, ready to kill that motherfucker.”

“I don’t get it.”

“What?”

“Aren’t you supposed to be loyal to the club? The other members are awful, vile criminals. Why would you get mixed up with them when you’re nothing like them?”

“Yeah, been asking myself those questions a lot recently. I don’t have an answer, but I’m trying to right my wrongs.”

“Is it because of Shelby?”

His jaw twitched. “Don’t go there, Ella.” He slapped my ass hard and stalked toward the kitchen.

“That hurt!” I rubbed my bottom.

“It was supposed to.”

I couldn’t help but smile as I closed the front door. It was fine. He didn’t need to answer me because I had firsthand experience with a broken heart. It made us do things we would’ve never done if we were whole.

Tomcat must’ve altered his life so he wouldn’t think of Shelby. In a way, I’d done the same thing by accepting Vegas’s proposition to be a club girl. Not at first though. I had tried my damnedest to get a job and make it on my own. When nothing had panned out, it felt like fate had told me to hurt Rocky where it counted most: his ego. And heart.

I hung back by the kitchen sink until I heard Vegas’s hog. Tomcat tapped on the window and nodded, assuring me he was there for me.

Be cool, Ella. You can do this.I opened the door and waved. “Hey.”

Vegas jerked his chin. “You’re looking tasty.”

I peered down at my jeans and T-shirt and screwed up my face. Was he serious? “How’s it been at the clubhouse now that RJ is back?”

“The same as always. He’s hardly around.”

“Oh, really?” I shut the door and joined him on the sofa.

“Yeah, but I don’t want to talk about him.”

“Okay.” I adjusted myself on the couch like I was getting comfortable. But really, I was shaking inside.

“Nothing is changing in the club. RJ will be president, but you’ll remain a club girl unless you take him back.”

“Well, I’m not taking him back.”

“Good. I was worried old feelings might’ve been the culprit keeping you away from the clubhouse.”
