“I shouldn’t have said that.” He put the pie aside, then wrapped his arms around me and kissed my head. “I’m sorry.”

“I don’t care if you’re sorry. I want you out of my house and out of my life for good.”

“Is that what you truly want?”

My heart lurched. I wanted to say yes, but it wouldn’t leave my lips.

“I’m sorry I hurt you.” He took my face into his hands, and his intense steely gaze bore into mine. “We can’t let what happened to us destroy our future. Even if you refuse to admit it, I’m confident the boy is mine.”

“You more than hurt me, Rocky.” Tears continued to roll down my face. “I’m not the girl you once loved. I’m so broken, I don’t want to wake up in the mornings. I just want to be done.”

“Don’t say that. I need you.”

“I don’t have anything to give you.”

“Just being with you is all I need.” He lightly kissed my lips. “Give me another chance.”

“Do you know how much I hate you for leaving me? I was alone after my parents died, and Vegas was the only person offering to help. He brought me into the fold of the MC. Gave me shelter, a car to drive, and a job after I’d weaned my son. My. Son.”

“Baby, I didn’t know.”

“I tried to tell you what I was going through on the phone, but you shut me down.” I sniffled and dried my eyes. “After that, it only got worse.”

“Tell me everything. I’ll do whatever it takes to fix what I broke.” The sincerity in his eyes almost made me believe him. But there was not a damn thing he could do to make me forget watching my mom die, giving birth alone, and being left with no other option than to become a club girl.

“You can’t fix everything. The scars are etched into my soul.”

“Try, Ella. Don’t give up on us.”

“I will keep Vegas occupied and believing I’ll marry him. I’ll even let you into my bed, but beyond that, I’m afraid to trust you.”

“Fuck, Ella.” He hugged me. “I will prove to you that you and the kid are everything to me. Nobody means more to me than you, baby. I’m fucking sorry for what you went through, and I will make it up to you. But you gotta tell me what the club did to you. Name every fucker who hurt you so I can make them pay.”

“Tomcat is the only person who respects me.”

“Tomcat. It’s always him you bring up.” He turned away and seethed.

“Because he’s my friend. He’s even trying to help you.”

“What did the others do to you?”

“You don’t really want to know, Rocky. It’s not like you don’t know how the club treated their whores.”

Understanding flashed in his eyes. “Did someone rape you?”

“As I said, Tomcat is the only one who respects me, and not even he could protect me.”

“Fuck!” A murderous glint flashed in his platinum depths. “I will kill every one of them.”

“I hope you do.” I watched his whole body shake, and his jaw clenched in anger. He was trying to hold it together, but I could tell it was tearing him up inside to know I’d been assaulted. I wasn’t sure why he seemed shocked and livid. The type of initiation for club girls wasn’t a secret. Rocky had to know I would’ve been made to have sex with every member. Perhaps he was in denial. Either way, his outrage was sweet, and my heart might soften toward him if he kept it up.

“I will.”

“Good. All I want is to be free of the club and to do as I please.” Like move out of Scornrock, South Dakota.

“Do as you please? I want that for you, as long as you don’t cut me out of your life.”

“Jesus, Rocky. I’m tired, and I don’t want to talk anymore. Let’s get some sleep.” Was I really going to allow him to spend the night? Yup, he’d gotten through to me a little, not that I’d ever admit to it. “Unless you’re leaving.”
