As I put the phone on the counter, it rang. I quickly answered it without looking. “Tomcat?”

“No, babe. It’s me.”

“Oh, Lydia. I thought you were Tomcat. I tried calling him, and it went to voicemail.”

“Hmm, that’s strange.”

“I know. I guess he’s busy. What are you up to?” I wiped the counters, the last thing left to do in the kitchen.

“Actually, we just rolled into town. Are you at the clubhouse or at home?”

“Oh, I didn’t know you were coming for a visit.”

“Well, to be honest, I was worried about you. How’d last night go?”

I heard Landon in the background but couldn’t understand what he was saying.

“Fine. The club voted Rocky in as president.” My stomach roiled at my nonchalant attitude. I couldn’t bring myself to tell Lydia what had happened with Vegas and Sid, even though she was my only friend. I felt disgusting and embarrassed and just wanted to pretend like the assault never happened.

“Oh, wow. I bet Vegas isn’t happy about that. Where’d you say you were? Home or the clubhouse?”

“Um, I’m at home, but we’re leaving shortly. Can you come by this evening or tomorrow?”

“Where are you and Rockson going? Maybe we can join you.”

“Actually, Joy is coming to watch Rockson while I go to the clubhouse with Rocky.”

“Ooh, Rocky is there? Does that mean you two are together?”

Rocky strolled into the kitchen with Rockson in his arms. “We need to go.”

“I know. Hey, Lydia. I need to go. I’ll text you when I have some free time. In the meantime, Mona should be at home.”

“Sure, babe. I should’ve called beforehand instead of spontaneously jumping in the car. We’ll go visit Mona for a while.”

“Sounds good. I’ll call or text. I’m sure I’ll have time later today.”

“Okay. Bye.”

“Who was that?” Rocky asked.

“Lydia. She’s Mona’s sister. She’s in town and wanted to stop by.”

“I want to play with Landon. Is he coming over?” Rockson asked.

“Maybe later today, buddy.” I noticed Joy walking toward the door. She lived up the road from us and was a teenager with no life outside of her anime shows and watching Rockson. She was a dream babysitter. “Joy is here.”

“I don’t want you guys to leave,” Rockson whined.

“We won’t be long, buddy.” Rocky kissed his head. “And when we get back, I’ll take you out for ice cream, then we’ll go grocery shopping to fill up the fridge.” Rocky winked as if letting me know he knew my financial situation. God, I was happy he was home.

“Okay, but don’t take too long.”

“We’ll only be gone an hour or two.” Rocky set Rockson down.

I let Joy in, explained what was happening, and introduced her to Rocky.

My man blazed down the road on his Harley. I’d unintentionally reignited his rage at Vegas and Sid. I couldn’t ride with him, so I followed in the beater car Vegas had let me borrow. After the assault last night, I couldn’t straddle anything or have the bumpy road abuse my tender lady bits.
