Vegas came out of the hallway with a gun, shot Sid in the chest, and put a bullet in Joy’s head.

I screamed and grabbed my head. “Where’s Rockson?” I ran to my son’s bedroom, terrified of what I might find. “Rockson? Buddy, where are you?”

“He’s not here.”

I whirled around. “Where is he?”

“I don’t know. When we arrived, he was gone, and the sitter was on the ground.”

“So Sid thought it was a good idea to rape her?”

“He’s a sick motherfucker.” Vegas shrugged. “But she’s dead and won’t have to live with the memory of being raped, unlike you.”

“I don’t even know who you are anymore.”

“Me either.” He aimed the gun at my head. “Let’s go.”

“I’m not going anywhere with you! I need to find my son.”

“You can have more kids. You’re young.” He shoved me out of the room.

“Please, Vegas, please,” I begged. “We need to find my baby boy.” I shuddered when I saw Joy again. From this angle, I could see she didn’t have bottoms on, and her head lay in a pool of blood. Sid had fallen to the side, still partially on Joy’s lower half.

“If Rocky hadn’t returned, I would’ve been president. Everything was in place just the way I wanted it. But no, he had to go ruin it.”

“I don’t care about any of that. I need to find my son!” I took my phone out of my pocket, but Vegas snatched it out of my hand.

“You selfish bitch! It’s always about you and what you need. Everything I did was for you!” He shoved me toward the front door. “Your parents’ death. Giving you shelter and a job. I spoiled you, and all you can think about is your snotty-nosed kid? I don’t know why I put in so much effort for you.”

“My parents’ death? What are you talking about? My dad killed my mom.” I stumbled out the door.

“I killed your goddamn parents!” He put the gun to the back of my head. “I should end you too, so you can be with them.”

“Please don’t. I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I’m just confused.” Clearly he’d lost his mind, and I had to keep my cool and calm him down. “I appreciate everything you did for me. That’s why I said I’d marry you.”

He stopped and moved in front of me, keeping the gun pointed at my head. “I don’t want to marry you.”

“What? Then why did you ask me?”

“Because I didn’t want you to go back to Rocky. Don’t you see, Ella? All I wanted was to use you and to let my men use you. That’s why I threatened every business in town, so they wouldn’t hire you. I took away every hurdle that could hinder you from being available when I wanted. Well, except for Nevada.”

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. Vegas had orchestrated every detail of my life since Rocky had left. Was this his confession before he blew our brains out?

“I’d kept RJ away from you after he left, pretending I was too busy to get your phone number for him. And then he stopped calling, and I thought I was in the clear. Finally, I’d have some peace. Then he returned.”

“It was selfish of him to come back.”

“Yes, it fucking was! So many people died because of him.” He looked at the front door. “But years ago, the first person I killed was Shannon. I had to if I wanted to get what I deserved.”

“RJ’s mom?”

“Yes.” He grabbed a fistful of my hair and yanked my head back. “She was a distraction and a waste of air, so I shot her up with a cocktail of drugs and made it look like she OD’d.”

Oh, Jesus.

“The woman in the woods a few weeks ago was someone I worked my frustrations out on.”

How did I not know how evil he was?
