“Get in the car.”

“Why?” No matter what, I couldn’t go anywhere with Vegas. Time was of the essence in finding Rockson. Nobody would know to look for him if I left. They might think Rockson was with me, and then I might not see my son again.

“We’re leaving town.”

“I’m not going anywhere with you, you son of a bitch!” I lunged at him with every bit of strength I could channel to make him fall backward. The gun went off as we both hit the ground.

Rocky (RJ)

Every goddamn time I thought Ella and I were humming along nicely, the universe smacked me in my fucking face.

I carried Cole to his mother and put him in her arms. “This belongs to you.”

“You’re an asshole.”

“Yup, you knew that when I left.” I wouldn’t worry about Cole after Ella had run out the door. Kids were resilient. Wasn’t that what the experts said? But my woman? Life had dealt her a rotten hand. I was positive she’d left, was probably devastatedagain, and was going home crying.

Irisah sneered at me. “Cole, sit here so I can talk to—”

“Rocky,” I snipped and stalked toward the bar, checking out the back to see if Ella might be there.

“Need us to do anything, boss?” Xabier asked.

“Calling me when Irisah got here would’ve been helpful. I could tear your heads off your bodies,” I growled at him and his brother.

“I tried, but you didn’t answer.”

I took out my phone and found it on silent. “Fuck. Go out back and see if Ella is in her car. If she’s not, go after her. Try her house. Do not let her go anywhere with my son.”

“Got it, boss. And turn your ringer on.” Xabier and Keeno ran out the back door.

“Your son? You haven’t even been here a month. How do you have a son?”

I turned around to face Irisah. “Why are you really here?”

“I told you. I’m out of money, and Cole missed you.”

“Why not go find his goddamn loser dad? I don’t need you ruining my life more than you already have!” I fished out my money clip from inside my cut, removed all my cash, and shoved it in her hands. “That’s it. I’m done with you. Come around here again, and I’ll take Cole, and you’ll never see him again.”

“You fucking bastard! I took care of you. I helped you get well when I didn’t have to, even sucked your dick when you couldn’t fuck. And this is how you thank me?” She genuinely looked hurt, but I didn’t give two fucks.

“Am I supposed to feel bad that you lied to me about who I was and where I belonged? You lied about Cole being my son. You kept me from my real kid! My son turns five in July, and he’s been without me his whole life!”

“He’s not any different from Cole then.” She crossed her arms over her chest.

“Are you serious right now? You can’t be this stupid and coldhearted. Cole had me! And my kid had no father.”

“Well, if he would’ve told me you had a—” She quickly shut her mouth.

My hand flew at her throat, and I moved her to the back room so Cole wouldn’t see us. “If who would’ve told you what?” As if I didn’t know she was talking about Vegas. “And if you lie to me, I will snap your skinny neck.”

“Vegas, the only contact in your burner phone. I called him after your seizure.”

I squeezed her throat as rage rushed through my chest. “You told me my phone was lost. That it must’ve fallen at the compound during the explosion.”

“I only told you what he told me to say. He wired me money so I could care for you and keep you out of South Dakota.” Her eyes teared up. “I didn’t know what else to do or how to provide for Cole and me.”
