“I don’t want Rockson to see the fire.” I sat up in bed and looked at Rocky. When our gazes locked, it felt like our souls tried to reconnect us. “Maybe I should meet them somewhere else.”

“Yeah, that’s a good idea. Tell me where, and I’ll have Storm call Grizzly.” He didn’t even ask to go with me.

“It’s almost dinner time. Rockson is probably hungry,” Tomcat said.

“You can feed him before going to the hotel.” Rocky reached into his cut and winced like he was in pain. “Fuck. I forgot I’m out of cash, but I can go to the bank and return before you go get Rockson.” He stared at his money clip, then turned to leave.

“Rocky?”

“Yeah?” He stopped but didn’t look at me.

“If you want to be there for Rockson, you can. I won’t keep you from him. It’s not like he would let me. His prayers were finally answered this morning when he found out you’re his dad.”

“It’s your call.”

And just like that, I knew he’d shut down. My heart couldn’t take it. I recalled saying the most hurtful words ever to have left my mouth. I’d just killed Vegas, and Rockson was missing, and all of it had happened after Rocky’s ex had shown up with a little boy who’d called him papa. I’d broken into a million pieces. But if anyone could piece me back together, it was Rocky.

“Tomcat, will you give us a minute?”

“Sure.” He stood.

“No, Ella.” Rocky turned around. “I’ll go get some money. You pack.”

“Are you pushing me away? Abandoning Rockson and me?” I was confident he wasn’t doing any of that, but I knew accusing him would light a fire in him. I needed him to fight and not give up so easily on us.

“No,” he hissed through gritted teeth. “I will never abandon either of you. Whatever you need, I will provide it. I won’t miss another day of his life, and if you try to keep me from him, I’ll…”

“You’ll what, Rocky?” The fire in him hadn’t burned out. Determination sparked in his eyes, and relief swelled in my tattered soul.

“I don’t know.” He wilted against the doorframe, holding his side.

“Tomcat, leave.”

And like the good friend he was, Tomcat left without a word.

I got off the bed and went to Rocky. “What happened here?” I lifted his shirt and gasped at the massive bruise on his side. “Oh my gosh.”

“It’s nothing. Just bruised ribs.”

“But why? How?”

“It doesn’t matter.”

“It matters to me!” I met his gaze. “It matters to me.”

“When I came after you, some of my MC brothers followed me out of town. They were shooting at me. I guess everything had been part of Vegas’s plan. Then Storm and his crew were waiting for me. I lost control of my bike and went in the ditch.”

I scanned every inch of him, looking for blood. “Did you hit your head?” I reached for it, but he stepped away.

“I’m fine. I’ll be back shortly.”

“Rocky.” I grabbed his arm before he left. “I want you to go with me to get Rockson.”

“I’ll do whatever you want. Pack your stuff.” He left, and I couldn’t take my eyes off him.

“Everything okay?” Tomcat asked.

“No. I’m not sure we’ll ever be okay.”
