“You snapped, sweetheart. Anyone in your situation would’ve done the same thing. You’re not a cold-blooded killer.”

“Aren’t I though?” I stared at Tomcat, sitting on the floor across from my bed. It hurt how he was keeping his distance from me. “Even you don’t want to be near me because I’m a murderer.”

“Jesus, Ella. That’s not it at all.” He got onto his knees and came to my side. Gently he brushed the hair off my face.

“Then what?”

“It’s different now. Rocky is here, and he should be by your side, supporting and comforting you. I can’t take that away from him.”

“Why not? He isn’t a good man, Cade. Not like you. I should’ve never let him back into my life.”

He sighed. “Ella, you’re overwhelmed. Now isn’t the time to be making any decisions about your future. What about Rockson? He finally knows who his dad is.”

“And telling him will be my biggest regret.” I blinked away tears. “Rocky already has a son.”

“No, he doesn’t. And if you’d talked to him, you’d know Cole isn’t his.”

My heart hiccuped at his words. “What? I saw the boy. He called him Papa and ran into his arms, like Rockson does to me.”

“Irisah is a witch. She manipulated Rocky, which kept him from returning home.”

“So he says.”

“Cole isn’t Rocky’s. She lied to him and the boy. Try to imagine how devastating it would be to learn the child you thought was yours isn’t and that you have a kid roughly the same age who doesn’t know you. It’s fucked up, Ella. I know you’ve endured a lot over the years, but Rocky was lied to and used too.”

“He never mentioned the boy when he told me about Irisah.”

“I’m not saying he’s blameless. He fucked up. Men aren’t perfect like you women.” He kissed my head.

“Don’t kiss up to me.” I pushed him away, and he returned to his spot against the wall. “How much longer before they come back with Rockson?” I didn’t want to talk about Rocky and me anymore. My head was muddled, and I couldn’t think straight. Tomcat was right. I shouldn’t make any decisions about my future today.

“Within the hour. When I went outside for an update, Grizzly and Libby had Rockson in their care and were on their way back.”

“To me, they’re Landon and Lydia. That’s who Rockson thinks they are. See? So many lies and deceit. I can’t take it anymore!”

“Ella?” Rocky knocked at my door. “We need to talk about Rockson. How do you want to do this?”

“Do what?”

“The Knights have cleaned the area as best they can, but I don’t want our son in this house.”

An image of Joy on the living room floor flashed in my head. “Come in.” I choked back a sob, trying to hold it together.

The door opened, and I averted my gaze from him.

“I’ll give you all some privacy.” Tomcat stood.

“No. I want you to stay,” I told him.

“It’s fine,” Rocky said, sounding defeated. “Just do whatever she wants.”

Tomcat sat back down.

“I think you should pack a suitcase, grab whatever is important to you, and Tomcat can take you to a hotel. Storm suggested we torch the place.”

Tomcat can take us to a hotel?Rocky really was defeated. I’d never seen him like this before.

“I’m on board with torching this dump.” Tomcat winked at me.
