“How long are you going to give me the cold shoulder?” He put the car in drive and pulled away from the curb.

“I don’t know.”

“You’re my daughter, Ellassandra. It’s my job to protect you. He’s not a good guy.”

“I don’t need protecting. Besides, you’re the last person who should be acting holier than thou.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“I know you cheated on my mom with your secretary in Iowa.” I let the words spray out of my mouth like poison. I no longer cared about his feelings.

“What? Who told you that lie?”

“You did, during the meeting when you were fired. You admitted it, you filthy, lying sinner.”

He turned onto our street, parked in the driveway, and faced me. “You can’t tell your mom.”

“Why? You afraid she’ll divorce you? I doubt it. She’s ignorant of your cheating ways.”

“Ellassandra, it would destroy her.”

“No, you would destroy her because you couldn’t keep it in your pants. God, you make me sick. I should tell her just to hurt you as you’ve hurt me.”

“What do you want? I’ll do anything.”

I lifted my gaze to his. “Leave me alone about the guy I like, and stop driving me everywhere.” It couldn’t hurt to ask, although it sounded a little like blackmail. At this point, I didn’t care.

“Fine. But if he hurts you, don’t come crying to me about it.” He got out of the car and slammed the door, then stalked into the house. I sensed his rage, but he wouldn’t unleash it on me. Not when I had a secret he didn’t want my mom to know.

I exited the car and felt a weird sensation spear down my spine, like I was being watched. I shut the door with my hip and dialed in to my surroundings.

“Ella.” Rocky’s voice came from a dark shadow behind a tree between my house and the neighbor’s.

“What?”

“Come here.”

“No.” I moved a few steps closer to the front door. “Go away.”

“Baby, I’m sorry I’ve been away. I had club business to deal with.”

“I don’t care. You didn’t even text me.”

“I’m sorry.”

“So am I. I don’t want to see you ever again.” I turned my back and jumped when his hand covered my mouth, and he pulled me back behind the tree. I struggled to break free and scream, but it was no use. Rocky was ten times stronger than me.

“Listen to me,” he said in a low, commanding voice. “I was out of town. I couldn’t text because my phone had been taken away. But as soon as I got back, you were the first person I wanted to see.”

I slapped his hand off me. “I don’t believe you.” It was then I noticed the bruises on his face. “What happened to you?”

“Told ya. I had club business. It got a little violent.” He gripped the back of my neck. “I’m sorry to fall off the radar. I can’t promise it won’t happen again. You just need to trust that I will always return to you.”

“I thought you were ghosting me.”

“Never, baby.” His lips collided with mine. “I told you, you’re mine.”

“Ella?” my mom called.
