David glared at me. “You killed my baby girl.”

“I didn’t know she’d be there. I was hoping to kill you.” I squared my shoulders, no longer intimidated.

“I lost two good men that night, and others won’t ever ride again due to their injuries.”

“Yeah. And I never had any good men in my life. I grew up with a drug-addict mother, with an uncle who abused me, and in a town where the sheriff and deputy preferred young boys over women. Just ask me how I know!” I shouted. “So I really didn’t give a fuck who got hurt when I went after you.”

“Jesus Christ,” Storm muttered. It was the first time he’d heard about my sexual abuse. I hadn’t planned to admit it. The words had just come out on their own. Now I wished I could take them back. Not even Ella knew everything I’d gone through as a kid.

“That’s no excuse for killing innocent people,” David said sternly. “She was just eighteen.”

“What do you want me to say? I can’t change what happened. All I wanted was to make you pay for your sins.”

“And you did, by killing my beloved daughter and destroying my marriage. Happy now?”

“And this is who our father is.” Storm shook his head. “Are you proud, Rocky? I sure as fuck feel like I won the lottery.”

“Don’t you disrespect me.” David stood. “I didn’t ask to meet him. You forced my hand.”

I cut my gaze at Storm. “Why? Why make us meet?”

“So the healing process can begin.” He shrugged. “You should know who your father is, and your son will want to know about his grandfather. David is a crusty, bitter man. But he’s not rotten to the core.” Storm went and opened the door. “Birdie, come here!”

“What are you doing?” David asked.

“Just a little demonstration.”

“Yeah, Daddy?” Birdie appeared, with Rockson by her side.

“Go introduce your cousin Rockson to Granddad.”

“Okay.” She ran toward David. “Hi, Granddad.”

He sat and lifted her onto his lap. “There’s my precious girl.” He kissed her head and gave her a bear hug.

“This is Rockson, my new cousin. That makes him your grandson.”

I was ready to vault out of my chair and rescue my son if that asshole did anything to hurt him.

David looked at my boy. “Rockson, it’s nice to meet you. How old are you?”

Rockson just stared at him.

“His golden birthday is July fifth,” Birdie said. “We’re planning a huge party for him.”

Rockson nodded.

“Is that right? Well, I hope I’m invited.”

“You will be, Granddad. All the family is invited. Right, Rockson?”

He nodded.

“Son, come here. Is everything okay?” I asked.

Rockson ran into my arms.

“You don’t have to be afraid of Granddad,” Birdie told him. “He looks scary, but he’s a teddy bear.”
