“He looks like Thanos. Just smaller and with hair,” Rockson said.

I had no idea who he was talking about.

Storm laughed heartily and hit his hand on the table like it was the funniest thing he’d ever heard. “You are so right, Rockson. He does look like the evil villain Thanos. Doesn’t he, Birdie?”

Birdie studied David. “You’re not evil, are you, Granddad?”

“No, precious. I’m not.” He kissed her head. “You don’t have to be afraid of me, Rockson.”

“Demonstration over. Birdie, take Rockson out now,” Storm told his daughter.

“Okay.” She hopped off David’s lap and collected my son, and they darted out.

“I don’t get it. What were you trying to prove?” I asked Storm.

“That if David had met you when you were a kid, he wouldn’t have turned you away.”

“I saw him once.” David sagged in his seat, scrubbing his hands against his cheeks. “I’d gone to Scornrock when I heard Shannon’s brother Keg had started the Hell’s Bells a few hours north of my territory. I paid off Keg to keep Shannon away.”

“Son of a bitch,” Storm barked. “I did not know this.”

“I’m done here.” I stood and placed my palms on the table and stared David down. “You stay out of my life, and I’ll stay out of yours. No more revenge. We can pretend neither of us exists.”

“Fine by me,” David replied.

“Both of you shut it!” Storm shouted. “This wasn’t supposed to end with you hating each other more.”

“Well, there’s no love lost, I’d say. I just want to live my life with my woman and kid. Nothing more.”

“Same. Too much has happened. I can’t look at him without thinking of Megan.”

“Fuck,” Storm growled.

“Okay, then we agree to stay out of each other’s lives.”

“Yes,” David replied.

I left the room and searched for Ella. I needed her in my arms more than anything else at the moment.

“This is absolutely fantastic!” Ella was perched on my lap, clapping while the old ladies performed. The vibe in the bar was nothing like I’d experienced before.

Shit, the number of people smiling and having a good time even freaked me out. I sort of liked the relaxed atmosphere.

“Are you getting up there next, baby?”

“No way! I can’t hold a tune to save my life.” She hooked her arms around my neck. “I like it here. Everyone is so nice, and Rockson has made several new friends. Maybe we should consider moving here… to be close to your family. You’re the only one with any living blood relatives.”

My heart hurt for her, but I wasn’t sure Minnesota was the place for us. “We can talk about it later.”

“I know things didn’t go as you hoped with your sperm donor, but Storm and Angel are good people. They want us close.”

“Is that what Angel told you?”

“Yes, and I believe her.”

I grunted and eyed Storm, who was wholly entranced by his wife singing on stage. He’d apologized and made excuses for ourfucked-up father. I could tell he was embarrassed, even ashamed, and he told me not to let David get under my skin, but of course, he had.

“Did you know we’re staying in a two-room suite at the club’s family unit?” she whispered in my ear.
