“Boss, so glad you could make it.” Xabier squeezed my shoulder from behind me. I peered up and smiled at him and his woman. “This is my gorgeous bride, Adelina. My love, this is Rocky.”
“It’s wonderful to meet you,” Adelina replied. “Xabier was so excited when we got the RSVP that you and your family were coming to the wedding. Texas is quite a ways away for you.” She bent to look at Bella. “She’s so precious.”
“Thank you. I wouldn’t have missed Xabier’s wedding.”
“Can’t believe it’s been five years, boss. Sorry I missed your wedding.” Guilt clouded his eyes.
“It’s okay. It was small. Nothing like this massive celebration.” I looked around the banquet room. There must’ve been at least six hundred guests.
“Most of our relatives from Mexico are here. Jeez, look at you with a baby. Tough biker guy like you, you’re not so scary looking anymore.”
“Better watch out. I morph into a beast once she leaves my arms.” I chuckled and rubbed Bella’s back.
“Now that’s the man I know.” Xabier winked. “So what’s that make, three kids?”
“Yeah, after all the crazy in Scornrock, I didn’t want to waste a second with Ella. Here she comes with my boys.” I admired my sexy wife in a tropical-print, strapless dress. I wouldn’t be getting lucky tonight with three kids sleeping in our hotel room. Kids were great, until they screwed up our sex life.
“Congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Ruiz. Your ceremony was stunning.” She got our boys situated with the plates. “I cried; it was so beautiful.”
“Oh, thank you,” Adelina replied.
“Look at Rockson.” Xabier went over to him. “What is he, ten now?”
“Yes.”
“You’re not so little anymore, mijo. How tall are you?”
“Five foot one. He’ll pass me soon.” Ella smiled brightly at Rockson.
“That’s crazy.” Xabier came back to my side and sat.
“I’ll be back, husband.” Adelina kissed him and darted away.
“You look happy,” I said.
“I am. Adelina saved me. I was in a bad way after Keeno’s death.”
“I know. I’m sorry I couldn’t be there for you.”
“No, boss. Your woman had been through hell. You needed to be with her and your son.”
“Yeah, but we should’ve reconnected sooner and not let so much time pass.”
“Hey, I’m not holding it against you. I lived in Mexico for a few years, wasting away on tequila and pussy. Then my nana kicked me out and sent me packing back to Texas. It was about six months later when I met Adelina. She’s a detective.”
My eyebrows shot upward. “Police force?”
“Yup. She cleaned my ass up. I don’t touch alcohol and stay on the right side of the law.” He puffed up his chest, all proud of himself.
“Pussy,” I said, teasing him. “She sounds like a good woman.” I glanced at my girl talking animatedly with our sons. Mine was a good woman too… priceless.
“I don’t deserve her, but I’m grateful she gave me a chance.”
“I hear you, man. So when are you going to start reproducing?” I kissed Bella’s head. “You need one of these.”
“Don’t tell anyone, but Adelina is two months pregnant.”
“Holy shit, you work fast.” I chuckled. “Congrats, Xabier. I’m truly happy for you.”
