I couldn’t take my eyes off him. It didn’t seem like we’d walked for very long, yet the road was nowhere in sight. Rocky turned the corner and was gone.

Suddenly my heart pounded, and my breathing hitched.

You can do this. It’s just a weird kinky game that Rocky likes.

I straightened my back and pushed forward, going deeper into the woods. We’d been out here dozens of times since we’d met. It was familiar. But I was alone and didn’t have my fierce, protective biker with me.

In the still night, creepy sounds came from all directions. I dialed in to my surroundings and wrapped my arms around my front. Small creatures moved about in the shadows. Twigs and dried foliage crunched under my shoes. The wind picked up and blew my hair off my face.

The scene reminded me of scary movies I’d watched without my parents’ permission. The Blair Witch Projectand the cult classicFriday the 13thwere two of my favorites. Now I understood why they had told me no. Every horror flick was rushing back with each step I took.Nightmare on Elm Street. TheSawmovies.Scream.Cabin in the Woods.

I peered over my shoulder but didn’t see Rocky. I kept walking, while my stomach twisted into knots. A vulnerability I’d never felt before crashed through me. I was cold, socold.

“Rocky, where are you?” I whispered to myself. How long had he been gone? It couldn’t have been more than a couple of minutes, yet it felt longer.

Pop, pop!

“Ah!” The gunshots forced me to squat and duck my head.

Oh God, Rocky.

The uneven, bumpy ground bit through the fabric of my leggings and palms while I crawled behind a tree. I hadn’t heard any struggling or fighting or Rocky hollering that he was okay. I reached for my back pocket.

Dammit! I left my phone in his saddlebag.

I hadn’t heard a car or motorcycle approach. Then again, I was a ways from the road. Someone could have jumped Rocky, tried to steal his Harley, or… killed him.

I gasped for air, my arms and core shaking and my teeth chattering. It was getting colder by the second, but I doubted the weather could be blamed. I was completely freaking out.

What if Rocky was dead? I was out there alone and unable to protect myself.

“Where is she?” a man yelled. I didn’t recognize his voice. It sounded a bit robotic.

I wrapped my arms around my middle and held my breath.

Hard steps crunched through bushes and broke twigs. His heavy breathing came from the left side of me.

If I called out to ask if it was Rocky and it wasn’t him, I’d give my location away.

Crap! I don’t know what to do.

From my vantage point, I couldn’t see anything. I quietly crept to a better spot to catch a glimpse. I just needed to know it was Rocky to resume his game.

Then why had there been gunshots?

Yeah, that didn’t make any sense.

The sound of metal hitting metal made me freeze in place. My anxiety shot through the roof, and erratic palpitations ensued.

“I know you’re out here,” the inhuman voice said. “No one will save you. Not your boyfriend, parents, or the police.” The metal rattled again.

Oh, Jesus! My legs wobbled, and a bolt of ice speared down my spine.

“Come out, come out wherever you are, baby girl. Daddy wants to play.”
