“It seems he prefers brunettes. Whatever.” I carried the drinks and plate to his table and haphazardly knocked the unsweetened tea inherlap.Oops. Not. I feigned mortification.

“Oh my God! You klutz!” She flew out of the booth. Her entire front was drenched.

“I am so sorry.” Not really. I turned toward Brenda, and she tossed me a towel. “I’ll clean this right up.”

“The bathroom is in the back, babe,” RJ told his girl.Baberepeated in my head like the scratched part on a vinyl record.Babe, babe, babe, babe…

“I’ll just be a minute.” She rushed off.

I quickly dried the table and bench, feeling a smidge of guilt.

“You spilled her drink on purpose,” RJ said knowingly.

“It was an accident.”

“The fuck it was.”

I cut my eyes at him. “I swear. It just happened.”

RJ wrapped his hand around my wrist. “You’re playing with fire, Ella. A good Christian girl like you should steer clear of men like me.”

“Then why are you here, rubbing your girl in my face?” I wasn’t trying to hide my anger anymore.

“To see your reaction.” His thumb rubbed against my rapid pulse. “And she’s not my girl.”

“Liar,” I sneered. “You want my reaction? Here it is… I don’t care who you’re with. Be with all the sluts if that’s what you want. Just don’t come around here anymore.” I whipped my hand out of his grasp.

“So you do care.” A devious grin curled his lips. “Maybe you’re not as innocent as I thought.”

“And you’ll never find out for sure,” I told him in a challenging tone. “Don’t talk to me again.” I took the sopping-wet towel behind the counter and threw it in the bin.

The brunette went back to her table. They had words. She looked pissed. RJ appeared unfazed, like he didn’t give a crap about her.

“What do you think’s going on?” Brenda asked.

“No idea.”

The brunette stormed out of the diner, and RJ calmly turned my way and nodded for me to sit across from him.

I shook my head.

His jaw twitched as he gestured with his finger to come.

“Better go before he causes a scene.”

“Fine.” I glanced at Brenda and back at RJ. “But be ready to call the police if this arrogant jerk causes trouble.”

“Why? The cops won’t do anything.”

I sighed and went to RJ’s table. “What?”

“Sit with me.”

“I’m working, and frankly, I don’t want to.”

“Well, I got rid of Juniper for you, so the least you can do is sit with me while I eat.”

I dropped onto the bench and glowered at him.
