“I figured you’d say that. You are an outlaw.” I tilted my head and peered at him with a narrowed, playful gaze.

“And you’re the preacher’s daughter.”

I sighed and shook my head. “I’m just Ellassandra.”

“An Iowa girl.” He shoveled more pie into his mouth.

“How’d you know I moved here from Iowa?”

“I asked around.” He drank his tea.

My gaze lowered to his Adam’s apple. “Of course, because this is your territory, and everyone does what you say.”

“That’s right.” He grinned like the Cheshire cat.

“It must be incredible to have power and control over others.” I squeezed my thighs together as he pinned me in my seat with his intense gray eyes. “What happens if someone doesn’t obey?”

“Do you want to find out?”

“Excuse me?” The air vanished from my lungs and my rapid heartbeat screeched to a stop.

“Never mind.” He dug into his pocket and put a ten-dollar bill on the table. “Later.” He got up and left, leaving without a backward glance.

What had I done wrong to make him leave so abruptly?

The rumble of a single motorcycle made my ears perk up. I hadn’t stopped thinking about RJ since the other day and hoped he would come back to the diner soon.

Yesterday had been my first day at Jefferson High School, and it had been okay. Nobody talked to me, and Brenda and I had different lunches. It sucked being the new girl. Today hadn’t been any better. I’d had a difficult time focusing in my classes, with RJ occupying my every thought. Thank goodness the weekend had arrived.

My new school did things weird, like starting classes on a Thursday. I’d probably spend the next couple of days obsessing over RJ anyway. I wanted a do-over, a second chance to talk to him after making a fool of myself. All I could think of was what I’d do if I saw him again, and I daydreamed about each scenario.

I sensed he thought I was too young and innocent. I probably was both, but deep inside me, someone not so innocent lurked in the dark corners of my soul. Maybe RJ could help me discover more about myself.

The door opened, he entered, and a woman followed him. He jerked his chin at me, went to the booth he’d previously sat at, and the brunette scooted in next to him. He threw his arm around her shoulders, and my stomach dropped.

“Oh, man. Is that his girlfriend?” Brenda whispered.

“Looks that way.” I snatched two menus from under the counter and went to his table. “Today’s special is liver and onions, and the pie is triple berry.”

“Liver?” The brunette made a gagging face. How charming. Not. “Gross.”

“You know I’m only here for the apple pie and sweet tea, Ella.” RJ’s fingers massaged the chick’s bare shoulder as he stared at me.

“And what about you?” I directed my question to the brunette, who I hated with every fiber of my body for being with RJ.

“I’ll just have unsweetened tea.” She stuck out her chest and kissed RJ’s neck. His hand crept over her boob, but his taunting eyes never left mine.

“Okay, I’ll be right back with that.” I whirled around and seethed as I went to get their order.

“I guess you know now,” Brenda muttered.

“Yup.”

“She’s nothing to look at, you know. Just a rocking body.”

“Yup.” I plated his pie.Just a rocking body for him to play with. I hated how my imagination went wild with images of them screwing.

“I think you’re prettier.”
