“Who’s there with you? I heard a woman’s voice.” Ella sounded more upset than before.

My stomach churned. “Jesus, Ella. Don’t you trust me?”

“Yes, but it’s been months since we last had sex. I know you, Rocky. I know your urges, and you can’t go too long without sex or drugs. Not even for me.”

“Jesus Christ, Ella. I don’t need to hear this shit from you.” I glanced at Irisah, staring at me with her arms crossed and tapping her foot.

“What are you hiding? Please, Rocky. Don’t lie to me. Tell me where you’re at, and I’ll come to you.”

“No! Stay put.” I squeezed my eyes shut, hating myself for upsetting her. “What do you want me to say? My own fucking father’s club is after me. You know how biker clubs are. They go after the man’s woman every fucking time. That’s you! So because of you, I have to stay away!”

“You’re blaming me for this?” she cried. “You asshole! Are you purposely trying to fight with me? Trying to push me away because you found someone else? Who is she?”

“Oh, Jesus fuck. A friend. That’s it.”

“A friend? So there is someone else. Are you fucking her?”

“If I was, it’d be nothing more than emotionless sex. But I’m not, so calm the fuck down! I don’t need you doubting me after everything I’ve been through.”

“Everything you’ve been through? I’ve had a lot to deal with too! Like I’m—”

“Enough! I’m not fucking anyone! But you better not be either. I’ll kill any man who touches what’s mine.”

“Are you serious right now? You think I’d get with someone else?”

“Vegas told me about the guy you were talking to in the park. Who is he, Ella? Have you already replaced me?” I could never tell when the VP was lying, so I had to ask Ella about the dude Vegas had seen her talking to. As usual, he’d riled me up and taunted me about men lining up to be with my woman. Fuck, I hated him. But he was my only connection in Scornrock. Vegas was who my uncle had trusted, so I guessed I had to too.

“No, I haven’t replaced you! Vegas is an idiot. Don’t listen to him.”

“Just answer the fucking question!” I roared.

“Rocky, the guys are here. Come on, babe!” Irisah shouted.

“Babe? She’s calling you babe? You are fucking her!” Ella yelled.

“Listen, I love you, Ella, but my life is all fucked up right now.” I did my best to calm down, but I knew her as well as she knew me, and we were at the point of no return. She was overreacting, and I was stressed out and could feel a migraine starting. I couldn’t comfort Ella. I just needed to go. “I’m not going to drag you into it. You just have to trust me.”

“Trust you? Well, I don’t. Not if you’re with another woman.”

“That’s your own goddamn problem. I love you. I will always love you, onlyyou, but I can’t do this with you right now.”

“Fine! Don’t bother coming home, Rocky, because I won’t be waiting for you!” She hung up. I got it. She was angry and hurt and hadn’t meant what she’d said. Of course she’d be waiting for me. She loved me.

Either way, I cursed my fucking life and went with Irisah to meet the guys. I couldn’t deal with Ella right now, but she could bet I’d spank her sweet ass the first chance I got for hanging up on me.
