“Hey, he meant no disrespect. We’re here, so no need to call your old man,” Red Bandana said. He looked older than the other one. By older, I meant early thirties. And his bandana reminded me of the one Rocky had used to cover my eyes during sex.

“Okay, but don’t try anything. This is Hell’s Bells MC territory, and they don’t mess around.”

“Oh, yeah? You associated with them?” No Bandana asked.

I raised my hand, showing the HB tattoo in the middle of the half heart. “I belong to the club.” I hated to admit I was the club’s property, but at this moment, it could be necessary, to protect me.

“We’re not looking for trouble,Mommy,” No Bandana said.

“Yeah, we’re just passing through,” Red Bandana said.

“Call me Ella. Mommy sounds weird.” They had accents, so the word mommy made me feel strange, like they might call their woman it during sex.Gross. I assumed they were Mexican because of their tan skin, dark hair, eyes… and accents.

“No problem. And who’s this?” Red Bandana asked.

“My son. If you can hurry, I need to get him home to decorate eggs before my old man gets home.” These guys needed to think I was well protected and that club members would be around. I usually wasn’t paranoid, but it was only me and my little boy, and I’d never seen these men before.

“No problem. Give us five minutes.” They went right to work.

I watched cautiously after I put Rockson back in his car seat. Of course, he had complained, but it had given me an opportunity to text Vegas to let him know I had a flat tire and a couple of men I’d never seen before had stopped to help. His reply:I’m on my way. I responded quickly, saying it was fine and they were almost finished, but Vegas didn’t reply.

“You’re all fixed, Ella. My brother and I will be on our way,” Red Bandana said.

“I appreciate your help. Where are you all headed? Up the road is nothing but private properties.”

“Oh, really?” Red Bandana looked at his brother. “We must’ve taken a wrong turn.”

“Worked in my favor.” I smiled and checked out their hogs. “You’re from Texas?”

“That’s right,” they said in unison.

“Whatcha doing up in these parts?” I put the tools in the back of my trunk and kept flicking my gaze past the guys, to look for any sign of Vegas.

“Just a road trip. I’m Xabier, by the way, and this is my little brother, Keeno.”

“It’s nice to meet you. Listen. I really appreciate you helping me out. But I should tell you that my boyfriend knows about my flat tire and you helping me. He’s on his way. You might want to get gone now.”

They both narrowed their eyes.

“You called him?” Xabier asked, clearly not happy with me.

“No, I texted him. I’m a woman with a small child. Can’t be too cautious.” I grimaced, suddenly feeling guilty for thinking poorly of them.

“Fuck,” Keeno hissed. “Do a good deed, and the boyfriend is coming for us.”

“Sorry, I just—”

“It’s fine. You’re right to be suspicious of everyone.” Xabier went to his bike and straddled it. “Take care.”

Keeno shook his head as he followed his brother’s lead.

I waved at them as they drove away, returning the way they came. I hoped to God they didn’t collide with Vegas.

“All right, buddy. Let’s get home so we can color some Easter eggs!”

“Yay! I liked those guys. Think we’ll see them again?” Rockson asked.

“Nope. They’re on a road trip all the way from Texas.”
