“Yes, I am.” His deep gruff voice circled me, making the hairs on my neck stand at attention.

I froze, sensing his closeness on the other side of the counter… mere feet from me.

“Are you almost finished?” he asked. “I’m ready to go.”

“Then go.” I turned to face him. “You don’t have to wait for me.”

“I do if I’m taking you home.”

“Excuse me?” I clearly hadn’t heard him correctly.

“Get your shit, and let’s go.”

Nobody had ever talked to me that way. My father and mother never cursed. They were such prudes. Occasionally, a bad word flew out of my mouth, but no one had ever said them to me. I never understood why crude language had been frowned upon. They were only words, but Christians acted like you were a disgraceful sinner if you said fuck or son of a bitch. We were all sinners. Not one of us was without fault. How could a word be the be-all and end-all?

I also hated how my dad and his members made people who looked and acted like RJ and his gang out to be unsavable. Where was the love and acceptance? Brotherly love mentioned in the Bible?

Admittedly, RJ’s tone and bossiness ignited butterflies in my stomach. I’d sensed for a long time that I was different, a little darkness inside me but inherently a good person. I cared about all God’s people, the good, the wretched, and the wicked. But I had a deep ache in my soul, a yearning to be controlled. And not how my parents bullied me into being like them.

If my mom knew how deplorable my dad had been, cheating on her, she might think differently, like me. Maybe I had gotten my immoral side from him.

“Move it!” RJ snapped, making me jump. A shot of adrenaline pumped through my veins and into my heart. It was the most incredible feeling ever.

“Okay.” I hustled into the back and grabbed my sweatshirt and purse.

“I heard everything.” Brenda rolled her eyes. “I can’t believe he wants to take you home. Some girls have all the luck.”

“It’s honestly nothing.” I refrained from smiling, knowing I would come across as a snotty bitch. For all I knew, RJ was messing with me. Or he had a wicked plan to hurt me… Strangely, the thought excited me.

“Whatever. He’s freaking gorgeous. I’d let him have his way with me.”

I glowered back at her.

“Ella, let’s go!” RJ hollered.

“Bye!” I ran out to the front. “Jeez, what’s the rush?”

“I’m an impatient man.” He grabbed me by the hand and tugged me out of the building.

“Clearly.” I stumbled behind him, trying to keep up with his quick, long strides. When he stopped at his motorcycle, I snatched my hand out of his. “No way.”

“Get on.” He straddled the seat, then started the engine.

“My parents would have a fit.” I shook my head. “I can’t.”

“They’ll never know.” He flashed a panty-melting smile, but I couldn’t let him distract me. The last thing I wanted was to get grounded for life.

“Yes, they will. They’ll hear the motorcycle when you drop me off.”

“I’m not taking you home just yet.”

I gulped. “You’re not?”

“No. Now get on.”

My curiosity got the better of me, so I hopped onto the back. I’d be a dork to pass up the opportunity to be with this bad-boy biker.

“Wrap your arms around my waist and hold on.”
