“Why?” I sat forward and put out my cancer stick in the ashtray.

“That’s her business.” Mona turned around and tilted her head, giving me a snarky pose.

“Oh, come on. Don’t give me that bullshit. Why isn’t she coming? Is she sick? Sore after her fuckfest with Tomcat?” I could hear her moaning in my head, and rage shot into my heart.

“No. Her little boy isn’t feeling well.” She shook her head. “With an attitude like that, you aren’t going to win her back.”

“Never said I wanted her back, especially after she’s been spreading her legs for all the walking STDs in the club.” I shuddered dramatically. “Disgusting.”

“Good, because I don’t want to let her go.” Vegas entered the kitchen and went straight to the coffee pot. “She deserves better than you.”

“Does she? So someone more like you or Tomcat?”

“Tomcat will never settle down.” He sat across from me with his mug of coffee. “I guess that leaves me.”

Mona huffed on her way out.

“I think your sweet butt’s feelings are hurt.”

He waved after her. “She knows how I feel about Ella.”

“And how do you feel aboutmywoman?”

“She ain’t your woman anymore. You left. It’s been over five years. It’s time you move on, because Ella sure has.”

“You’re right.” I could choke the motherfucker to death. “So what happened to her parents?”

He jerked in his chair. “Jesus, you jump from one topic to another fast.”

“As you said, it’s been over five years. Fill me in on what’s happened around here since I fled Scornrock for my life—beginning with Ella’s parents.”

“It’s tragic.” He drank his coffee and averted his eyes from mine.

“So I heard. I went by her old house and discovered the Hills weren’t there. How’d they die?”

“The police call it a crime of passion. They must’ve been arguing about something, and after Pastor Hill beat her, he ended his own life. It happened in his office at the church.”

“Fuck.” I sagged in my chair.

“Ella’s mom was alive when found, only badly injured. She remained in a coma for weeks, until Ella let them pull the plug. She’d held a vigil and stayed by her momma’s side day and night.”

“When did this happen?”

“New Year’s Day. When you called her on Valentine’s, she said you wouldn’t let her speak. She never got to tell you what was happening in her life.”

I didn’t have any memory of the call, but it sounded like I’d been a fucking asshole to Ella.

“She’s had a rough time, you know. Lost everything.”

“I need to talk to her.”

“Don’t. Just leave her alone and go away. There is nothing left for you. None of us need you disrupting our lives, especially Ella.”

He’d love for me to be out of the picture for good. “Keg wanted me to be president. It’s my birthright. When are you going to vote?”

“Some members are on a run and won’t return for a week or longer. You know how it goes. Some jobs don’t happen as planned. Either way, we can’t do shit until they return.”

Right. I bet he’d tell his crew to hold off on returning, just to delay the vote. “I’m sure you can make an exception for Keg’s flesh and blood.” I grinned and relaxed in my seat.
