“No, I can’t. It’s stated in the rule book that all members have to be physically present when voting for a new president. Proxies don’t count.”

“Well, that’s fucking stupid, considering I’m the only blood relative and next in line.”

“Keg was never logical.”

Vegas wasn’t wrong there. My uncle had been off his rocker, just like my mom. “So a week.”

“Or longer, depending on if the guys have any trouble.” He drank his coffee. “We’re also dealing with a recent abduction. A woman was taken. Voting isn’t high on our to-do list.”

“Okay.” I calmly stood, not caring about the missing person. He must’ve been making shit up to put me off.Whatever. I could wait a week. In the meantime, I’d figure out what to do with Ella. “Later.”

“You’re leaving?”

“Yup. I’m going to get reacquainted with the town and Ella.” I turned to leave.

“Nevada isn’t feeling well. Don’t go bothering them.”

“Nevada?” What the actual fuck kind of name was that?

“Her boy.”

“His name is Nevada? That’s ironic, since your road name is Vegas. Is it supposed to mean something? Are you his father?” I sneered at him and put my hand on my gun, tucked into the back of my jeans.

“No, it’s just his nickname.” Vegas’s right eye twitched.

“I don’t believe Ella gave him thatnickname. You did.”

“It was a mutual decision.”

“No the fuck it wasn’t.” I bolted before I emptied my clip into his goddamn face. I refused to believe Ella would give her son a nickname closely connected to Vegas.

My phone vibrated in my pocket. I removed it before getting into my truck and groaned when I saw a text.

Irisah: Can we talk?

I shook my head and started the engine. Hell no, we couldn’t talk. I had nothing to say to her. Another text came through.

Irisah: Please Rocky. I’m so sorry. Give me another chance. We miss you.

Rocky: Leave me the fuck alone, or I’ll ruin your life like you did mine.

I pulled out of the parking lot and drove without any idea where to go. I just turned when I wanted to, and after twenty minutes, I ended up at the woods on the outskirts of town. Irisah hadn’t replied. That was smart of her. She knew I would make good on my threat.

But I wasn’t out to hurt Cole, and I missed him too. He was innocent, a pawn used by his mother to secure the life she’d had with me. I knew the truth now. Even if the details were fuzzy, I knew without a doubt that Cole was not my son. Irisah was evil and manipulative. She’d used my situation to better herself. She was a selfish bitch, and if it weren’t for Cole, I’d strangle her to death.

I got out of my truck and followed the trail. I needed to calm down, before I aggravated my dull headache. The last thing I needed was to screw myself up because I couldn’t control my emotions.

One of my first memories of Ella was chasing her in these very woods. I’d dreamed about it almost every night and would wake up panting and sweaty. Of course, I couldn’t hide anything from Irisah lying beside me. She’d wake up and ask if I was okay. I’d say it was just a bad dream, but sometimes I would come in my shorts.

Irisah had to have suspected I remembered stuff. It wasn’t like I’d forgotten everything from my past. Details were muddled, and I’d get people and situations mixed up. Anytime I had been confused, she’d had the answers.

When I’d mentioned my old lady and needing to go home to her, Irisah had gently reminded me that Ella was myex-girlfriend. Then she’d retellourlove story and Cole’s birth. Stupidly, I had believed her.

Irisah had altered the timeline of things to align with Cole’s conception. She’d convinced me that I was his father. I’d been the only dad he’d known, and it fucking hurt that he wasn’t mine. I’d loved him like my own, and walking away from him last week had about killed me. But I wouldn’t live a lie anymore.

I hated Irisah, and Ella wasn’t too far behind her.

How could the love of my life not search for me? And what about her kid? WasNevadamine? If he was, Ella should’ve done everything possible to find me. And if he wasn’t mine…
