“A week?” I charged toward him and shoved him in the chest. “I hate you! Hate you to my core, and I never want to see you again!”

“Ella, stop! Calm down and listen to me.” He captured my hands and secured them behind my back. We were chest to chest, his lips lightly touching my forehead. “Just fucking calm down and hear me out.”

“No. Nothing you say will make any of this okay.”

“You haven’t even let me try.” He dragged his lips across my skin and pulled me closer to him. The heat from his body mingled with mine and made me weak. He grew hard as he pressed his pelvis against my stomach, and I wasalmostfalling under his spell all over again.

“Mommy, what’s happening?”

I ripped myself away from Rocky, ran toward Rockson, and lifted him into my arms. “Shh, buddy. It’s okay.”

“Who’s that man?”

“He’s nobody, just a stranger who’s lost.”

“Ella, I won’t let you push me away.” Rocky stalked toward us, his gaze locked on Rockson as he assessed every detail about him. Not good, so not good.

“You have no choice. You left, and I moved on. Now leave before I call Vegas and Tomcat.”

“They can’t help you. I’ve told you before. No one, not God or the Reaper, can keep me from you.” He paused as if he couldn’t believe what he’d just said. “You will hear me out.”

“Those words are meaningless after nearly five and half years.”

“But I’m back, aren’t I?”

“Not because I want you here.” I bet he was back because his girlfriend had kicked him out.Loser.

“Don’t be a bitch,” he hissed.

“Are you honestly going to do this in front of my son? Is that the man you are? One who will frighten an innocent child for your own selfish reasons?”

He pointed a finger at me like he wanted to smash my head with his fist. “You will regret this.”

“No. I regret nothing and will sleep peacefully, knowing you no longer affect me. I don’t ever want to see you again.”

“Is that right, no regrets? You’ll sleep peacefully because I don’t affect you? Challenge on, baby.” He put his hands on his hips and pressed his lips together to contain himself, but I knew he was seething inside.

“Just go away, Rocky.” I carried Rockson inside, shut the door, and waited. I half expected Rocky to roar like a beast or pound on my door, but he didn’t.

Moments later, his truck started, and he left.

Would it be foolish to hope that I would never see him again? Probably.

“Who was that man, Mommy? A biker?”

“I told you, buddy. Just a stranger.” I kissed his sweet head, cursing myself for lying to my baby boy.I was protecting Rocksonwas how I justified myself. Rocky was unpredictable. I didn’t think he would harm a child, but how could I risk it after what he’d done to me?

“Is he going to hurt me?”

“No, my precious boy. He will not hurt you.” I gave him a gentle squeeze and kissed him again. “I promise he will never hurt you.”

“What about you?”

“Don’t worry, my love. We’re safe.” I brushed my fingers through his brown hair. We were safe today, anyway. I didn’t know what tomorrow would bring. “Why don’t you go play in your room, and I’ll get you a snack.”

“Okay.” He wiggled out of my arms and skipped down the hallway.

I went into the kitchen to make a bag of microwave popcorn. While waiting for it, I retrieved my cell phone, which had been left where I’d been lying on the sofa before Rocky had arrived. I dialed Lydia’s number and listened to it ring.
