“Ella?”

“Hi, Lydia. You’re never going to believe who was just here.”

“Who?”

“Rocky. He’s back, and I’m not handling it well. I didn’t know who to call. Is it a bad time?” I checked the time on my phone: 2:13 p.m.

“No, no. Now is a perfect time. I’m on a break. Tell me everything.”

“Well, he showed up yesterday at the clubhouse, totally unexpected. He caught me with Tomcat, but I didn’t stick around. I left like my ass was on fire. I’m such a coward, but I had to get Rockson from school. In any case, Tomcat spent the night with me because I was freaking out and didn’t want to be alone.”

“Wow, that’s a lot, honey. And how are you doing?”

“Not good. I stayed home from work and lied about Rockson being sick. Look what Rocky does to me, even after years apart. I used my son to avoid him. Kept Rockson from school, a school he loves, for my own selfish reasons.”

“Don’t do that to yourself. It must be difficult seeing him again. Did he come alone?”

“No. He brought two guys with him. The same ones who’d fixed my flat tire the day before Easter.”

“Creepy. Do you think they were watching you and reporting back to him?”

“Oh, definitely. Rocky knew about Rockson.”

“I’m so shocked he’s back. Did he say where he was all this time and with who? Or why he’s back?”

Boy, she was asking a lot of questions. Almost like she was reading from a list.

“He’s been in Texas, living with the same chick I’d heard in the background when he’d called me that one time. Tomcat told me Rocky wants to be president. I’m sure that’s why he’s back. Not for me.”

“I think you’re wrong, honey. He’s back for you too.” Lydia knew a lot about me because I’d had no one to confide in, and she was an excellent listener. Unlike her sister, Mona, I believed Lydia would keep my dirty laundry to herself. She was my closest and only friend—besides Tomcat.

I almost wished she was right, but it didn’t matter. I would never take Rocky back or trust him with my heart again. “I need to get out of South Dakota before I fall under his spell.”

“I will help you any way I can.”

“There are a couple of hurdles.”

“Like what?”

“Money is the first.”

“I can wire you some.”

Phew, what a huge relief. I hated asking her for money, but I was desperate. “The other is Vegas. I don’t think he’ll let me take his car. And he might not let me go at all. The club has to vote to release me.”

“Oh, jeez.” She let out a frustrated sigh. I got it. Lydia didn’t know the ins and outs of MCs and how some were fucked up, like the Hell’s Bells MC. “I’m sure you can leave. Where’s the nearest bus station?”

“I think—”

“Scratch that. We can come for you.”

“You can?”

“Of course, honey. Landon and I can be there later today if you want.”

I almost screamedyes. “Today is too fast. I need time to get things together. But knowing you’ll come for us means the world to me.”

“Aww, Ella. We love you and Rockson. You’re family, and when family needs help, we’re ready to spring into action.”
