“They’re better to me than you ever were.”
“We fucking loved each other.”
“Love doesn’t leave.” I point toward the door. “Now get the hell out.”
“No!”I pull away from Lyra, my heart racing in my chest. “No! No! No!”
Lyra hides her breasts. “Isn’t that what you wanted?”
It is what I wanted. Desperately.
When I first came here, it was my goal to knock her up, so I’d no longer have to struggle. She’d pay the price while I reaped the reward.
I thought I could do it. I thought it would be easy.
Then, reality hit.
I loved a woman once. Or at least I thought I did. A woman whose swollen belly was her ticket out of the slums.
But that belly cost her years of her life, and it was all for nothing.
And that’s exactly what’s going to happen to Lyra.
“I don’t understand,” Lyra says sweetly, looking so much like the good girl she was months ago.

Fuck, what is wrong with me? I can’t believe the things I’ve done to her. That I’ve treated her so obscenely when all she ever wanted was a good life.
But babies don’t fix things. Not in this world.
“You can’t keep it,” I blurt.
“What the hell are you talking about?”
“It’ll kill you!”
Lyra’s jaw drops, but she doesn’t say a word.
“Look, I’m sorry. I know I fucked up, but you have to listen to me—the baby is going to kill you. I’ll take you away. I’ll protect you. I’ll care for you, but you can’t keep the baby.”
Lyra gets up from the couch, pushing me aside.
I grab her by the wrist. “You have to listen to me.”
SLAP!
I deserved that.
“Lyra, please!”
“Don’t you Lyra me! You’re fucked in the head, Brock! All I ever wanted was to get along, have your baby, and heck—love you, even. But you’re impossible.”
“Love me?” I repeat back, shocked.
She shakes her head in disgust. “I can’t believe I fell for you.”
I don’t know what to say to her, I’m so damn confused. After Amber, I was so sure that love wasn’t real. That it was something people said to validate staying with each other.
