“I think this is for you,” I say, handing it to her.
Her eyes light when she sees them. “It’s Caleb and Carrie! And they’re okay.” She touches the screen and writing comes up. Tears stream down her face as she reads.
“Now that we’ve fulfilled our end of the deal, will they be staying with us?”
Lyra shakes her head sadly from side to side. “No, and I’m okay with that. They look so happy.”
“Are you sure?”
She puts down the device and presses her eyes closed. “I love them, but I never wanted the responsibility of caring for them. I hope that one day I’ll see them again, but honestly, this is what’s best for everyone.”
She moves over on the bed and pats the spot next to her. “Now get undressed so we can cuddle through the rest of the storm before we have to assess the damage.”
She doesn’t have to tell me twice.
Crawling into bed, I curl next to Lyra and say a silent vow to protect her and our baby.
Because for once in my life, I know love. True love. And no one is going to take that from me.
