“Have you told anyone in the government?”

“Do you think they would listen? And even if they did, they would think they could fight it with their current and conventional weapons; they cannot. Dragons are wicked shapeshifters who were thought to be extinct. They aren’t; they were just more adept at hiding. Three of their most evil queens rose last year to battle some unholy spawn of hell. Now that they have closed the rift into the bowels of the Earth, they believe nothing can stop them, and they are beginning to enact their plan.”

“You do know how crazy this sounds, right?”

Whistler nodded. “I do. Thus the reason I have kept my knowledge to myself and am actively working to find the Phantom Fire, bring them down, and ensure they do not eradicate man from this Earth.”

“This prophecy…”

“A tablet.”

“This tablet… what will it do?”

“Legends say it contains a way to weaken the dragons so that they can be more easily defeated. I am convinced that with the tablet and Norle, we can wipe out the dragons and save mankind.”

“Why me?”

“Because you have proven your ability to find ancient building sites, ones that will tap into the Earth’s power and protect those who live and work there to defeat this enemy,” said Whistler, sounding a bit unnerved.

“Why should I believe you?”

“Because you’ve seen them. They’ve already tried to kill you or worse…”

“What could be worse than being killed?”

“Being encased alive in a kind of sarcophagus until they have turned you from human to shifter, and then being forcibly mated to one of these monsters so they can procreate.”

“It is very difficult for two species to crossbreed.”

“Difficult, but not impossible. And with human DNA intertwined with their own, it becomes much easier. Besides, once turned, it would be easy enough to use you and other females as breeders.”

“I’ll want to see what evidence you have.”

“I will give you access to everything I have. You must help us, Delaney. If you can find the prophecy and we can build a manufacturing site in the Winds, we might be able to defeat them. Help me, Delaney; you’re my only hope.”

Whistler sounded not only desperate, but like a princess in a movie set in a galaxy far, far away.

Chapter 11

Tevryn

Tevryn woke angry and moody. He hadn’t slept at all for the past two nights. Part of his restlessness was believing the dragon’s attack on Delaney was not random. The other was just his need to feel his mate beneath him as he stroked them both to numerous orgasms. Delaney was by far the most responsive, sexy, and gorgeous creature that had ever walked the earth.

He smiled remembering the way Falkor’s eyes would follow Kessily, or his hand would rest possessively over her swollen belly. He now understood that feeling. And Warrick watched Dani with the same look of lust combined with possessiveness and love. He’d thought his brethren were crazy to give up a life that involved numerous women and much to drink. He had looked forward to going into a town where he was unknown and seducing some buxom beauty into his bed for a long night of hard and rough lovemaking. But no longer. Now the only female in his heart, soul, and mind was his eternal flame.

Stumbling out to the kitchen in Dani’s loft, he saw she was standing with Warrick, grinning at him. “You’re right; he looks like shit.”

“I know,” chuckled Warrick. “It’s the way of dragons. We convince ourselves that any female will do to slake our lust upon, and then we get waylaid by our eternal flame and never so much as think of another female again.”

“Is that true, Tevryn? Do you never even think of other women?”

Tevryn shook his head. “At this point as I have yet to claim my eternal flame. A random memory of another woman may occur, but it makes me sick to my stomach.”

Dani raised her coffee mug to her smiling lips and took a sip. “I think I rather like that.”

“And what about you, my love?” rumbled Warrick seductively.

“Oh, I think about other men all the time—mostly about how I’d like to arrest them and put them in jail—but if the occasional memory of a lover from a past flits across my brain, I just remember none of them had your big dick or prowess in bed.”
