“Life puts us in extraordinary places so we can meet our soul mates.” He nudges Amy. “I keep telling her she’s going to fall for a local.”

Amy rolls her eyes. “Hang on. You jumped ahead. Rhett was one of the surprise football guests at Eden’s Dad’s sixtieth. And Rhett knows Cleo, Yasmine’s sister.”

“Small world,” Samuel comments.

“I have heard about you, mate. I know Eden was concerned for your safety, and I’m glad you made it safely to Australia.” Rhett turns his focus to me. “Weren’t you talking about a charity for the indigenous in the Amazon when you first came back?”

“I was.” I’m smiling, as out of the corner of my eye, I can see Samuel’s surprise. “I wanted to do something to help until life got busy.”

Rhett leans his elbows on the table. Long, tanned arms protrude from his polo sleeve. His thick muscles twitch with the slightest movement. It’s obvious he’s remained fit working on the farm. “If you get it up and running, let me know. I’m looking to be part of a unique charity.”

“Samuel’s the one to talk to. He has all the knowledge.”

Samuel stares at me. “We haven’t discussed this, but it’s definitely something I’m interested in investing in.”

Rhett stands and shakes Samuel’s hand. “It’s good to finally meet you. We should set up a business meeting in the future. Amy has my number, so call me any time.”

Rhett walks away, and Samuel kisses my cheek. “You’re full of surprises.” He drops his arm over my shoulder. “Have I told you how much I love you?”

“Stop,” Amy says and groans. “Get a room. Wait, no… because it’s in my house!”

Samuel elbows me.

Then he groans. I assume he’s reacting to Amy’s comment until his expression falters. “I don’t feel good.”

I freeze.

His hand is on his stomach, and even in the dim light, his face has paled.

“Would you mind if I leave?”

“I’m coming with you.” I slide out of the seat, ready to take his hand. “I’ve only had one wine, so I’ll drive.”

Amy is beside us. “Can I do anything? Buy a bottle of water?”

“I need to get him home fast,” I whisper.

Amy understands as I vented my concern to her, and she checks in on Samuel regularly.

Samuel limps out to the car as though his hip is painful. My stomach is in knots. How severe is his abdominal pain to make him hobble like an old man? The benefit of small towns is we arrive at Amy’s house within minutes. After helping him inside, he almost falls on the bed and curls up on his side. He reaches for his phone in his pocket.

“Do you want me to call anyone?”

He shakes his head. “I underwent some tests during the week. I’m messaging a colleague to see if the results are in.”

I sit beside him on the bed. “What tests?”

“A few different ones. We’ll talk about it later.”

His phone dings, and he groans.

“What is it?”

“Mum and Dad have arrived in Sydney. They’re staying a few days to tour and adjust to the time difference.”

“That’s a good idea.” Because I know Samuel would not want to be like this when they arrive in Adelaide.

“There’s medication in my bag. Can you please grab it for me?”
