His eyes are closed. I don’t move for a moment as the truth hits me. He hasn’t shared any of this with me. I then rush to retrieve his small suitcase. “There are two types. What are they for?”

“Spasms. It should help my gut. The ones in a bottle are antiparasitic. I need the small box.”

“You have a parasite?”

“Not that I know of,” he murmurs. “It’s precautionary.”

I have so many questions, yet I let them go.For now. I head into the kitchen, and Amy is warming a hot pack. “How is he?”

“Okay.” I shrug. “I wish I knew what’s going on with him.” I fill a bottle of water and take it to Samuel.

“Thank you,” he says, downing his tablets.

“Is it something you ate? The chicken? And you had a beer,” I emphasize.

“Maybe.” He screws up his face.

I glance up at Amy in the doorway holding a hot pack. I wave her in. Samuel opens his eyes and smiles at her. “Thanks, Ames. Please, Eden, I’m fine. Go and spend time with Amy. It’s a chance to be with each other. And by the sounds of it, you still have much to talk about.” He winks at Amy.

I run my hand over his forehead. His skin is cool with no sign of a fever. “Okay, but if you need anything, just call out.”

Amy gets us bottles of water, and we head into the lounge room. It takes a while for us to fall into easy conversation.

“I almost forgot.” She jumps up and heads to her room, and returns seconds later holding a small, wrapped box. She hands it to me. “I saw this in a local shop and thought of you.”

It’s a ring with turquoise cut into a heart shape. I slide it onto my finger. “Amy, it’s exquisite. Thank you.”

“The lady said turquoise is a calming stone and represents wisdom, love and tranquility, protection, good fortune, and hope. It’s also the stone of communication.” She shrugs. “It’s pretty too, and the color matches your eyes, and I thought this hasEdenwritten all over it.”

I hug her tight. “You are so kind, babe.”

“You deserve it.”

Her kindness brings tears to my eyes.

On the coffee table, her phone makes a funny noise, and we jump apart. “It’s Yasmine,” Amy says excitedly and holds up the phone. “She knows you’re here and wants to FaceTime.”

Amy and I sit close together and wave when Yasmine’s face appears on the screen.

“Hey, my girls,” she sings.

“You look great,” I tell her. Dark ringlets are pulled back into a small ponytail, and it’s changed her face. Her cheekbones pop.

“Iquitos is steaming hot, and I need my hair off my neck. It’s grown since being here. It also sticks straight out on the ends.” She grins at us, and I want to hug her.

“We miss you,” I tell her.

“You both look good. How’s Berri?”

I grin at Amy. “Full of hot men.”

Yasmine breaks into a hearty laugh. “Did she tell you about Chad?”

“No, she didn’t.”

“Oh, I can tell her later. I have another bone still to pick with her.” Amy scowls at me.

Before we say it’s Ethan, the image shakes, and Michael comes into view. “Hi, ladies, how are we?”
